I made a slightly crazy move a fortnight ago and resigned from my current job. I had nothing lined up to go to, I just knew I couldn't stay :o Being on 3 months notice gave me time to find something, and being somewhat of a specialist meant I had a few options of what to do.
I had an interview yesterday, and within a couple of hours of walking out of the building I found out I'd got the job - woohoo! It means I'll be living in the Basingstoke area during the week, and back home in Manchester at the weekends. Luckily I upgraded my car a few months ago as I'll be clocking up a few miles...
Does anyone around the Basingstoke area know the best place to get a flat? And can you recommend me a gym?
-
Wow! Seems like a really long drive :o
Congrats!!
-
It's about 3 hours / 200miles. A coffee and a few CDs and it'll be OK ;)
-
Well done Dave, must be decent money to make all that commuting worthwhile!
Isn't Ian somewhere round the Basingstoke area?
-
good work mate!
i'm sure missing your lady will be a tough one though
-
Yep Phil - you could say the cash is decent ;)
Missing the lady will be tough, but weekends should be extra special. Plus there's always Skype!
-
Yeah yeah, missing the missus and all that. But what guitars you taking?

The whole lot presumably, now that there's only five!
-
Ha ha! I'll just be taking the Modern Eagle, that's all I play at home.
I need to get myself a laptop, pocket pod and some speakers so I'll start a new thread asking for some recommendations.
On the down side, I'll have to leave YC/DC and possibly my own band too :(
-
Philly is right, I'm a Basingstoke man. Whereabouts will you be living?
EDIT - ignore the stupid question. I obviously hadn't fully read your first post!
-
Totally surprised by this move as well Dave - it will be great to have another BKPer in Basingstoke!
-
Cheers Ian - we'll have to have a pint or two once I'm there. Should be early November :)
-
Well done Dave. As you say, a bit of a lifestyle change but I am sure it'll go well.
-
Congrats! Hope you will have a good time there, despite missing the lady.
-
congrats :)
-
Hope all goes well - congratulations!
-
$%ing hell! That's a bold move mate.
Hope it works.
Now you're in the same situation as me.
The drive away at the start of the week is a killer. In my situation, it has made my relationship with the wife better.
Good luck

Cheers folks. I've just met up with a mate of mine to get some advice re. contracting and I now need to:
a) Find an accountant
b) Set up a limited company
c) Work out how to get a PRS through on expenses...

I do a lot of company setups. I use a formation agent we've dealt with for years but, to be honest, the cheapest way is to do it yourself.
There are loads of formation agents offering online setups but really it's probably best to go straight to the horse's mouth at Companies House. The fee is only £18 (but I'm not sure if there are optional extras on top of that):

Let me know if you have any questions! :D

I've done IT contracting for years and the limited company/accountant thing was way too much hassle so I've switched to an umbrella company. They charge a fixed monthly fee and do all the tax and NI for you. Plus when you use an accountant you have to hold cash in your account and settle up the tax quarterly - that made budgeting a real headache for me, I was glad when I wound the company up and got my weekends back.
Also: HELLO again people - I closed my account here a while back when I decided to cut back on my internet forum usage but here I am again, returned to thrill you with more slide guitar versions of easy listening classics.
-
i've used a formation agency before - i forget which one.. it was easy and took the pain out of the process. but to be honest, i'd do it myself now for the £18 Companies House fee - just like Philly Q suggests.
-
Yeah, that seems to be the way. Based on my mates accountants fees, who does everything an umbrella company does, it's a cheaper and more flexible option. Looks like a no-brainer.
-
Wow! Big change. I'm coming to the end of a two week holiday and dreading going back to my place. I know that all I'll need is one or two "bad situations" to arise in the first day or two and... sigh...
Hats off to you for making the move.
Good luck with it :D
-
Somehow I missed this...
I'm near B'stoke too
Which company are you contracting with?
-
I've got a mate who is contracting and also uses an umbrella company. Takes out a lot of the hastle and he gets paid weekly too.
-
I'm near Basingstoke too :) Well done/good luck on the new job...
