I don't know if this has been asked before, but obviously guitar takes up a lot of my 'hobby space', with a range of guitars and my VHT; but does anyone have any other hobbies?
I like building model kits, photography and art in general, and the thought of what everyone else does came up; since most of us veterans can tell we like guitars very much. Whether that's buying them *cough* or playing them in a band as well.
-
Computer gaming (mostly 1st person shooters online with mates, PC gamer only here) and building computers.
Photography - got my first SLR last autumn, got a 365project going at www.365project.org/roobubba and enjoying learning that!
Non-guitar related music: piano especially at the moment.
Not sure if my occasional running counts...
I used to have soooo many as a kid/student but time/work/study got in the way, so I had to give up judo, orchestra, quartet and solo viola playing (my sister now has my viola), rugby, rowing, cricket and countless others :(
-
musics definitely my main thing. though i have taken up road cycling - it takes up alot of my time though and I'm considering stopping
-
Does socialising count? I keep getting invited out, drinking vodka and then laying it down on the dance floor.
Other wise I'm a boring sod who spends too much time on the internet reading the news and watching cats on youtube. I do working out too but that has slipped a bit and need to get the habit back.
-
Learning is my main one, really. I just like garnering knowledge. Philosophy, anthropology and ancient history, mostly. But anything that takes my interest.
Reading fiction too, but mostly I read academic stuff.
Other than that it's really the usual TV/Film and music related stuff, festivals, gigs...
Used to play lots and lots of rugby as a youngster but wrecked my shoulder and had to pack it in at 18. Also used to play Games Workshop too, still mournfully walk past the shops now and again and fancy getting back into it. But then I smell the people.
-
I do this (http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/motas/juno10.html), play with this (http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/motas/bbt7.html) and this (http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/motas/porker11.html), and have been known to make a few of these (http://juansolo.demon.co.uk/stompage/index.html). What with my day job as well, I don't actually don't get a lot of time to noodle around on the guitar!
-
Roo - Wait until you have kids mate. You'll be surprised at just how much more you have to give up
I know it sounds soft, but I spend a lot of time socialising with my mates. I'm in the house from 7.30pm when the lad goes to bed, so we quite often have a house full of guests. Most of the time it's good, but the washing up it creates is becoming a bit of a pain in the arse.
I'm also trying to get a business off the ground, which although it probably can't be classed as a hobby, definitely takes up more time and brain space than one.
I'm starting to get back into golf again as I used to play when I worked at a golf club. I like all sports where you can smoke and drink at the same time. Played a couple of times in the last month and I'm terrible. I really like it, but it's one of those sports that divide people and I don't really want to be considered as a golfer.
-
I used to play Warhammer 40k (no poofy Fantasy for me, no!), but with the business of my band and all I haven't the time for it anymore. So now it's just music, and that's it.
-
Apart from music and reading (which isn't really a hobby in itself, just something I've done all my life) my only hobby is Warhammer 40K.
Played it throughout the nineties, quit in 99 and picked it up again in 2009. A hobby I share with my wife, btw.
We got the new Warhammer fantasy set as well, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
-
I like running and going out into the hills on my MB. Mainly running though as it's not so much a time commitment.
Shin splints coming back now though so I'll have to knock it on the head for a month or so....
Roo, some great photos there
juansolo has the best hobbies :D
-
I used to have hobbies, but that time is distant now. :(
Dungeons & Dragons (and similar RPG games) nights with friends were among my favorite; I also enjoyed doing Martial Arts.
Nowadays guitar is the only hobby left, apart from some occasional computer gaming.
-
I take quite a lot of photos (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_atrocity/sets/72157626228447678/) and sketch and paint (http://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_atrocity/sets/72157622794040751/) a bit though not as much as I should and I go to watch a lot of cricket in the summer. I see a lot of films too but then I guess that's a bit too close to my job for it to be purely a hobby. :)
-
i used to play golf (badly) but i got pissed off with our cr@ppy weather after a couple of summer washouts :(
does dossing count?
i guess reading...
i'm just waiting for afghan dave to turn up to say wanking
-
juansolo has the best hobbies :D
Yes he has.
-
Shin splints coming back now though so I'll have to knock it on the head for a month or so....
I get shin splints and lower back pains whenever I try to run, I'm sure there must be ways of avoiding it but I haven't figured it out. So generally I don't run.
Anyway, apart from buying guitars I am mainly into films - mostly genre movies (esp. horror), world cinema, old classics. Not romcoms. I have loads of DVDs but my interest was tailing off because it had reached a point where nothing much was being released anymore.... but now I've started all over again with Blu-ray.
Also into reading, there's never a time when I don't have a book on the go. Fiction, 99% of the time.
I've also developed a new, unwanted "hobby" this year - since I became diabetic I spend many a happy hour trying to work out what the hell I can eat without (a) raising my blood sugar and (b) losing even more weight. Also doing a reasonable amount of exercise to try to stay as healthy as I possibly can.
-
I've gotten into gardening, the pipe and slippers must be just round the corner
-
@HTH: That looks awesome,
I wish I still did a sport, team games were great especially rugby. And now I'm having difficulty even finding someone to play pool..
-
Really enjoyed Roo and Andrew's very imaginative photos and the latter's artwork is superb.
-
For me it's mainly Chess, Swimming, lifting heavy things , Manga/Anime and I've been playing quite a bit of dwarf fortress lately.
I also like to science.
-
I used to love making model kits - think some of that discipline crept over into guitar making .
Photography is something I enjoy but dont do enough of ............although I do snap a few guitars
Sport wise I'm pretty much just an F1 fan, although taking part I quite like cycling and swimming when I can afford some time.
I used to enjoy playing football but it was just getting too rough and violent and ending up in fisticuffs too often, so I lost interest.
-
Photography but mainly cycling. Moved to Whistler for at least 2 months, mountain bike heaven!
I also love films and drama tv series (Entourage, Breaking Bad, Dexter, Sons Of Anarchy etc).
-
Apart from music, I am keen on photography, reading (mainly non fiction and predominantly history), walking in the countryside( yeah I know...lame) and I have started to write songs again in earnest so I ought to add that.
-

+1 - some great stuff in there. Do you know if there is an equivalent iPhone app? My daughter is getting into drawing and this would keep her very busy on a long drive down to the Lake District that we are doing next weekend!
-
Nice artwork.
I collect spores, molds and fungus

Can hang overs count as a hobby?

I do a lot of cycling and swimming but college is due to start up again pretty soon so I'll be lost in the world of maths again
-
physical fitness.

I'm stuck in on the computer this Saturday night so I'm chatting to this "submissive" girl I met online about what I'm gonna do to her... It's going well at the moment and I'm packing major wood. :D
Its got potential as long as it isn't a ladyboy or some Police sting... :?
-
Since I somehow contrived to make my hobbies into my profession, I suppose all I'm left with is video games.
Reading doesnt count; it should be part of a normal life in civilised society
Afghan, if you had to choose; ladyboy or police sting, what would you prefer?
-
Ah, I like these either or things...
I go for the Ladyboy... It would probably sting in a rather different way but at least I'd still be able to keep my job as a primary school teaching assistant. :)
-
That and the police sting could end up stinging over and over...
Probably not worth thinking about, carry on :)

Well, I'm meeting up with her now, so if I suddenly disappear from the forum - DON'T believe what they say about me on the news... I did none of it!
Elliot's a lawyer isn't he? :?

Let us know if you can still sit down, Dave.
-
I guess for me its the obvious with guitars etc.
Im trying to learn how to produce some good mixes also.
Then outside of that ive become a big fan of building amps & pedals and tweaking them to perfection.
I am also a big fan of video games mainly stuff like final fantasy, Metal Gear Solid & uncharted.
Stuff with a good strong story line
-
I like to keep fit by going out road running a few times a week. It's a great way of de-stressing for me!
-

Thanks for the kind comments everyone. And yes, Brushes is also available for the iPhone/iPod. I'd suggest getting a stylus to draw with - I can't do finger painting. I use one called the Pogo Sketch, you can get one for about eight quid from Amazon. Hope that helps.
-
Cheers Andrew - just downloaded the app. Finger drawing is very difficult so will be going for a stylus!
I suspect that any results I/my daughter have will be nowhere near the quality of yours. Will at least keep her busy on our trip though and also be good for me when getting the train.
How many hours would you say you put in to some of those pics? They are extremely good and must require a lot of discipline!
-
I've all but given up playing guitar for a bit as I have no desire to play and can't seem to find anyone to form a band with that isn't either a backstabbing 2 faced b**tard or that aren't total a$$clowns that can't play. The last drummer I played with couldn't even count to 4 and wondered why none of us started playing when he counted in to 3 and then started playing the song
So I've left it for a bit and I've taken up golf
Apart from that about the only other stuff I do is play XBox and PS3, watch films, and read.
-

Each of the sketches is about two hours work - you can go pretty quickly on a tablet, much faster than using traditional media. I don't think I'm disciplined enough and am starting to work on my drawing in a more rigourous way. Thank you for the compliment by the way!
-
I like Roo and Andrew's photos, really good.
I like taking photos but don't do a lot of it these days. I used to earn a bit from years ago. Apart from play about with home recording I go to the ice rink and do a bit of skating. I've inlines and quads too. Swimming and a bit of cycling too. I'm playing a lot of guitar though and rehearsing a lot which I'm really enjoying.
How did it go with the Sub Dave?
Meeting chicks online is a pretty good hobby as well
-
Roo I really like your photos, especially the abstract ones. May as well post mine up - http://www.flickr.com/photos/toddersby/
Really impressed with the Canon S95, when you get used to the shutter lag and such you can get some great photos even on action shots. If I brought an SLR with me I doubt I'd have used it nearly as much as I can just slip this in my pocket.
-
Thanks, Tom - liking your Vancouver shots there, some cool action pics!
-
nice! im off to vancouver in about a month. first time there. just sayin'
-
Vancouver's a nice city but being a villager at home I much prefer it here in Whistler.
-
Meeting chicks online is a pretty good hobby as well
Speaking to my mate who's a slag and does the online thing a lot I hear it's a numbers game. Hard to get them to meet but once you do it's basically a case of not $%&#ing up.
I have been practicing my drinking and went out 3 times this weekend which had the by product of making out with 3 women. Last night's was most amusing, girl checks me out so I go up and be all direct "Hey! You're sooooo checking me out!!!" was going well but her mates buggered off so she went with them and gave me her box of chips. So then I just walked up to another girl walking past me and went, "Some girl just gave me all her chips!!!" So shared those got chatting, take her on dance floor, do my usual dance floor thing, pull her in, BOOM MAKEOUT!!!
-
is your "...usual dancefloor thing..." dropping a roofie in her white wine spritzer? PDT_001

Music is my main thing, though i also love cooking (and eating), films and reading
-
I like to do all sorts of sports, but the only thing I'm training regularly is boxing. Used to be kickboxing, but I've moved to a new town a month ago and there's no kickboxing here. I figured boxing was the closest equivalent.
I like reading as well almost exclusively fiction (mostly crime novels or sci fi) and do some computer gaming when I can find the time.
-

Hahahaha!
Nooooo, you got it all wrong, it was a red wine spritzer!!!

Nope :(
If I'm thinking of the right one then we met for coffee, didn't click. Had a few dates with a girl from a party, was sooooo close then she just wanted to be friends.
Since then been a place voted UK's easiest place to pull, I had 4 make outs but know a guy who got 10 in there once.
-
Just be friends to me reads 'I don't want you to put it up my mimsy, but you can do me in the chocolate starfish'. At worse you could get her to fist you! If she can get both hands up ther and not clap, then the job's a good 'un!
If I was you I'd be more direct about your intentions, just get your old boy out over a latte and a flapjack. Works for me every time 100% guaranteed.
-
I was thinking of talking about fine wines and Belgium chocolates

I like the new web site.

In the last year or so my main non-guitar hobby has been fitness/weight training. It was kinda forced on me: I went to buy a new suit & to my horror had to buy 38" waist trousers with it  , so I had a health check at work & was even more horrified to discover that I had >25% body fat :( . But I've really enjoyed it this time around - even after 8 months, I look forward to my next workout...

Good for you!
I am developing more interests again in studio photography - albeit mainly guitars etc but I can sense that the touchpaper has been relit to an extent.
Just invested in some new lights and some better softboxes to improve how my images come out.

Loving the light reflected in the neck and into the heel.
(I'm easily pleased)
-
haha Antag I considered 38" trousers an achievement a few months ago! I think at my largest I was something ridiculous like 46" Now down to a 34" thanks to 2 months of non-stop mountain biking in Canada :D

"Those Who Are About to Die(t), Salute You!"
Good job mate.
-
Cheers Dave, the annoying thing is I'm at an almost "normal" weight now but still have a belly and some moobs left :( good job I enjoy cycling!
-
I have a ridiculous metabolism, allowing me to eat pretty much anything I want, and only bulk up the tiniest bit. However, I do bike to work a lot, so there's a factor.
Nice to know mountain biking did that to you Tom! Sounds LOADS more fun than some arse-boring treadmill
-
I suggest you buy one of these (to begin with)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/York-Vinyl-Kettlebell-16-kg/dp/B0028RZ742/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1320921140&sr=8-7
and a DVD by Anthony DiLuglio

You will be hooked, stronger, more flexible and never pay a gym membership again in your life!

The annoying thing is, you buy trousers in your "new" size but before you've even worn them you're a size smaller again... you end up with a sort of "gallery" of different-sized jeans (which you hope you'll never need again, even though it's a waste). :(
Well done though, gents. :)

So that's what has kept you so busy and away from the forum
Good for you!
Yeah, well there's that plus one other "hobby" that took me away for a while: Nappy changing :| - my wife gave birth to our third child in June (don't think I mentioned it here, sorry ) :)
Plus I've been flat-out busy at work too...
-
Nice to know mountain biking did that to you Tom! Sounds LOADS more fun than some arse-boring treadmill
Yeah I can't do normal gym-based or routine exercise. It's so boring. I didn't even realise how much exercise I was doing in Canada especially as I was getting the chairlift to the top of the mountain each time.. but it was a 5km ride each way, which is nothing on a road bike but can be a bit of a pig on an overbuilt downhill bike with fat tyres  Combine that with at least 8 downhill runs a day which are actually pretty tiring and I guess it all adds up. I got about 200 runs in total :)
It obviously wasn't all done in the last 2 months, its been a steady thing over at least 3 years. Mostly road biking.
-

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did (I bought the 300 Workout (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Spartan-Warrior-Workout-Action-Ripped/dp/1569757917) & Ultimate Kettlebells (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Kettlebells-Workbook-Dave-Randolph/dp/1569758743) books).
I've been training in my garage and adding equipment as I've needed it, so it hasn't cost me much at all, but it's been a lot of fun & I feel much better for it...
-

Thanks, it's needed doing for about 3 years, now that it's finally done I'm really happy with it.
