Title: Pickup mix?
Post by: paulmapp8306 on August 20, 2011, 05:36:56 PM
Im having a custom build fro Melancon and can have any PU I choose (where as Suhr and Anderson I cant :( ).

Anyway - HSS, chambered body - PROBABLY Basswood though maybe Alder.

The "S" Pickups will Be Irish Tours.  What bridge HB would ballance enough volume wise - offer some more modern rock options, and will also tap well for more typical strat and Tele mix's.

Im thinking Abraxix, but maybe a little hot?

I want hotter than Mules that I have in a PRS whatever I go for.

The Abraxas will do fine and splits well. I have a Crawler/IT-set in my MXG customstrat (swampash, ebony fratboard, made by Patrick Eggle). The Crawler sound like a hotter Abraxas, so a bit more compressed which is great for soloing, but is capable of fat, growling chordwork too. Still has that hot-PAF-character. Splitted very nice tones with the IT. I'm pleased with this pu. The Abraxas has - what I hear in it - a bit more air and chime in the topend. I don't it's to hot for the tones you're after.
An other option is a Holy Diver, which breezes 80's-metal but can do in my opinion a lot of rock/metal-styles. Quite beefy, splits well. Does a great job in brigther sounding woods.

Thanks for the reply.  I think the Abraxis will do fine as long as it will ballance with the ITs.

I have two PRSs - one with Mules for the classic sounds, and one with HFS/VB wich is ceramic (well the bridge is - and is 15k DC) quite thick sounding and compresses a little.  i also have a Mex CP Stat with ITs.

What I want is a little more top end cut from the SCs in the custom build - which the woods should provide (basswood/maple with m,aple neck being brighter than an alder body and maple neck with rosewood board) meaning the ITs will still be a great choice.  I want the HB to sit between the Mules and HFS from an output level (closer to the HFS though) but to be Alnico - and have the air of the Mules with a little more mids and power.  Ideally Id have prefered 12-13k DC BUT I dont like the sound of the Emeralds (which sit in that range).   The Crawlers I like but are too hot for what I want.
