Title: digital distortion
Post by: hincks on September 01, 2011, 07:55:59 AM
does anybody know of some digital distortion pedals? im not talking about the modler ones that are supposed to sound like an already exsisting effect i mean an orignal stand alone distortion box thats digital. the harsher and nastier the better. Also, does digital recording gear clip the same way tape does? excuse me if thats a noob-ish question lol but i dont know shite about recording

Just out of curiosity, why would you specifically hunt for a digital box? I've not been impressed by one, yet.

because digital disotortion is alot harsher than analog. im going for the ugliest tone possible, like a wall of razorblades raping your ears then throwing up in them. speaking of which are there any digital FUZZboxes??? i would be in heaven

See if you can find the old "Digital Metalizer" from Boss. If ugly distortion is what you want, you'll find it there...

when i first heard about the digital metalizer i almost jizzed in my pants. but then when i looked into it turns out it got that name because its a distortion pedal with digital chorus built in. the distortion itself is analog. i think alot of digitech pedals are actualy analog too strangely enough

Try to see if you can find a DOD Buzz Box used, somewhere. That thing was horrifying and seems to fit your description.
You may also be interested in an analogue fuzz with a bias/volt knob to give it a starved sound.

also look into the boss mt2. I believe its Digital and its one of the worst & nastiest sounding pedals i have ever come across.

There is also the DOD death metal which i arent sure is digital but it sounds the way you describe but with a bit more low end chunk than the boss

i'm sure there are pedals out there which do 'bit crunching' reduce the sample resolution, and sample rate to make it full of artifacts. i can't think of one, but i'm not up with all the boutique pedals on the market. it would be simple to design one anyway.

Not a commercial pedal, but is this the kind of sound you're after?

Actually would feeding your guitar through a ring modulator & a regular distortion (or fuzz) pedal have the right effect?

Also- if you have a headphone out on your amp,  try running it into your computer's line-in and push the signal hard. Try clean and dirty. The sound of digital clipping is disgusting.
Don't worry, you're probably not blowing your speakers- it's supposed to sound that way.

I'd look for an old, cheap multi FX pedal like a Zoom 505 etc.

The distortion in those were usually digital and they also sounded like a$$

I suspect he's after something like this:

WMD Geiger Counter (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A7VFxIBj84)

Or the Civilian Issue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=we5JErCLwPk)

Being a fan of noise boxes, needless to say that I *need* one.

No idea what the lad was using, but when I took the Mrs to a gig at Twickenham in 2008, one of the support bands was Biffy Clyro.

They were quite possibly amongst the 5 worst live bands I have ever seen, including terrible pub bands who couldn't really play their instruments. I'm trying to be impartial here, as it's not my style of music either, but honestly they were that bad.

No movement from any of them, except the guitarist kept changing between two equally terrible-sounding guitars between tracks. You want to find out what their guitarist was using, because it was all treble and presence, no bollocks whatsoever. Now I like full-on, nasty, brutal tone, but it's got to have mids and at least a few lows in there, or it just sounds thin and weedy. This guitar tone was just utterly awful.

If it's shockingly bad tone you want, copy Biffy Clyro!

When I saw then he was using a pair of Peavey Classic combos and a few Strats.

It may not be digital, but the Z-Vex Fuzz Factory is crawling with all kinds of nastiness.

This pedal by far. It's just overkill, haha

i guess it doesnt really matter wether the pedal is digital or not although it would be an added bonus lol. stuff along the lines of the metal zone or death metal is more the sound im going for stuff like the geiger counter is too out there. all those bit mangling type pedals make alot of weird synthy noises that i dont need

i was going to suggest this, green ringers make everything sound  pretty nasty... coupled with a particularly nasty distortion - could be quite bad

When I was at university, best part of 30 years ago, I ordered a funny little homemade headphone amp from an ad in the back of a music paper.

It sort of worked, but as soon as the battery started to wear out (which didn't take very long at all) the sound would degenerate into a load of chattering noise which seemed to bear no relation to the notes you were playing.

I quite liked it.

An old Zoom will do. Never heard a proper distortion out of those boxes.

A new Zoom will also do, for that matter

the dying battery thing can work well  - easy to rig up a more practical version too
