cheaper than the usual repro's!
nope, its not one of mine - i have been focusing more on authentic fender clay dots recently.
-
Added bonus - that pick wont slip from your hands!

Very smart! :)

They do look a lot like the proper Gibson side dots - nice attention to detail!
And the reproduction of Fender clay dots is a fascinating process too!

Does it in involve urine? :)
Very 'ingenuitive' of you!

why would it?
the fender clay dots i have been working on start out life like this
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/dots1.jpg)
look like this when freshly installed
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/relic3.jpg)
and the big bonus with this material is that it will darken with use - a wipe with some rosewood oils gives them an instant vintage look and wont wipe off again when cleaning the board - so they act like the original material too, which all end up looking different
there is some evidence for harvite being one of the original materials used by fender, so its about as authentic as it gets
-
So you can make Fender Red & Blue dots too! I thought he used some old floor tiles for the original dots?
-
Added bonus - that pick wont slip from your hands!
And lower wind resistance for faster picking!

It was a JOKE reference to how some ppl age guitar parts ...

There's lots of folks who ain't gonna want your repro clay dots now Wez... now that you've given all your secrets away... if you ain't peed on them, they obviously ain't gonna be authentic enough...

I'd better say, just in case Wez is taking that to heart, I'm quite happy for my Strat neck not to be peed on!

well i have joked about using wee to age copper covered guitars before - but luckily a weak vinegar solution works just as well for that! I have heard of ageing chrome with urine - but i dont fancy that
there are lots of stories about the original fender clay dots, and a couple of different looks which suggests they may have used different things at different times before finally switching to pearl
its pretty much accepted that they used some kind of filler at some point, supported by factory workers from the time talking about a toothpaste like filler and known inconsistencies in the dots. I think they called it ivorine or something like that, which happens to be a simialr constitution to the resin used to make these poker chips
then i found this quote which adds some weight to it
"Fred Stuart, John Suhr and John English did a lot of research on this back in the early Custom Shop days. The best they could find out was that it was a material called "Harvite", that was a fine clay impregnated phenolic resin. It also used to be used in old poker chips and hotel key fobs."
i did try the callaham dots - which are similar, but a pale grey colour and they dont really change colour with the application of rosewood oils, so i guess they use a more plasticy modern resin.
with the originals you often see darker dots on the darker fretboards which suggests that they change colour from a combination of rosewood oils and playing wear - - which these harvite dotsseem to do too!
so yeah, authentic fender blue and red dots are now available ;)

 Well, I did my best to get you the "full" treament!
Btw - Wez - that pic of the fendery rosewood board, is that Philly's? Looks fabulous, absolutely gorgeous.

If it is gonna be Philly's and you like it, just wait 9 months and you'll probably find it on ebay! PDT_038 PDT_041

That is my Strat neck, and it is not going on eBay.
(Although a few other necks may well be trading that well-worn path....)
-
^ - Please, can we all remember this post - ^
We'll see....
-
This one is for my hardtail Relic Strat project. It's a Fender neck which Wez is ageing to mid-'60s specs (approximately - it's actually a '62 style slab board, not veneer)
I really won't be selling this one! Even if it turns out rubbish (the guitar that is, not the neck!!) I'll just move the neck, pickups and hardware to another body.
-
To be fair Dave, I think this neck is actually on or at least destined for a specific instrument. So there's a good chance that its trip to ebay might be some way off (compared to the treasure trove of spare necks hiding in his wardrobe)
EDIT: Philly posted while I was typing... there you go, from the horse's mouth.... (and we all believe him, honestly, we do... a bit like we believe TF won't be buying another PRS after the last/next/wotever one... and the tooth fairy... etc, etc)
EDIT2: It's a FINE looking neck there, Philly :D

Sums it up nicely Andy.
And I can't deny the existence of that treasure trove of spare necks.
The problem with the Warmoth site is.... that I keep looking at it  . And if something comes up which looks better than something I've already got (and, naturally, haven't used yet) I can't resist buying it....

Yeah, I didn't believe that one from TwinFan either, it's almost pathological with those two... Remember when Pearly Gates first turned up?
Denial isn't just a river with those two... :P

ONLY if Wez is actually FITTING it!!!

I never actually say "that's it, I'm not buying anything else ever" (but don't bother searching, it'll probably turn out I have said it  ). I do go on a lot about having to sell stuff before buying something else.... and then I buy it anyway. :|

No, that'll be me....
And just to add weight to your scenario, I have the body and all the metal parts for the guitar.... but still haven't ordered the pickups or scratchplate. So it could be a little way off....
-
You need this innovative custom guitar case...

I'd never be able to fit all those drawers. The space is full of old broken guitars, necks and bodies....
