Title: Miracle man neck in PRS std 24 bridge position?
Post by: asianaxeman on September 04, 2011, 06:22:03 PM
I wiped the dust of my prs std  24 today and am setting it up in E flat with d'addario 11s for alice in chains covers. Having become used to BKPs I can't accept the inferior clarity of the stock VB/ HFS pickups, just never could be arsed changing them till now tho. I heard that the neck MM sounds like a suhr aldrich, i.e. a more aggressive HD in the bridge position. My question is, sorry if it's been asked before, if I wire in BKPs (mm neck in to bridge and CS neck ) in to my PRS (with a 5-way rotary) will it still sound ok without reversing coils in the neck etc, since I'm not fussed about the split sound...? esp since the CS neck has good cleans without being split anyway..?

Without reversing the magnet and the hot/ground leads in one of the pickups the tonal selections should be the same as with the original wiring but the positions 2, 3 and 4 will no longer be hum-cancelling. But reversing the magnet is not too difficult if you are careful. I did this with a used Holydiver bridge to make the rotary selector positions work in my PRS Custom. At the same time I had to fit a 4 conductor wire - the pickup came with a single braided wire.

If you only use the straight bridge and neck humbuckers why not toss the 5 way rotary and get a 3 way toggle? That would be simpler to operate and all positions would be hum-cancelling.

Cheers Stephan

yes good idea mate, i think im just gonna get a 3 way, although it will be nice to have push-pull to coil split the miracle man neck which is very good. I tried the neck mm in the bridge position and although high output and smooth, it lacked character and mids of the HD and was more compressed. So I'm just going to wire the mm set in to the prs in conventional style. thanks for your input.
