Title: Miracle Man for Charvel?
Post by: Sancho on September 05, 2011, 11:54:51 AM
I want to swap out the stock JB/59 set in a Charvel San Dimas for a set of BKPs.
Originally wanted to put in a set of VHIIs, but Tim suggested a set of Miracle Man pickups might get me good results.
I like the idea of having more output but not 100% sure it won't be too shrill.

Anybody here have any experience with the MM in a superstrat style guitar?

I had a miracle man in my Ibanez (basswood). Glorious. :) I wouldn't describe it as shrill at all. Brutal, aggressive, punchy and grindy: yes, but shrill: no.

holy divers would sing in that san dimas I can tell ya, similar to satchel's tone from steel panther! miracle man pups will be higher output but not as organic, esp if you have a maple fingerboard

Maple fingerboard and alder body. Which is why I'm a bit wary of a very trebly pickup.

I already have a Holydiver in a Soloist. It would probably not sound quite the same in the Charvel, but I'd like to go for some variety. Holydiver is an option though...

if u like the hd in the soloist i suggest sticking to alnico pickups, you'll miss the dynamics if you go to ceramic. But saying that, the MM, is prob one of the more dynamic and organic ceramics. If I were in your shoes, I'd get the VHII calibrated set.

how about an alnico miracle man for a change?
sounds great on the bridge as well and you could convert it to ceramic if you don't like it
somewhat similar to the diver, but fatter and slightly hotter

I would also go for a HD over a MM as suggested. I never got along so well with the MM anyways.

Its quite a step in output from VHII's to MM's. Love the VHII in my ash strat. It's a great rock/old schoolmetal pickup, which works well in bolt-on-guiitars. The MM has way more grind and hair, from what I heard, but I don't have experience with it. Choice depends for a great deal on the musicstyle.

AlNiCo MM is out of the question, as per Tim.

Music style is hard rock/heavy metal, 80s style. Accept, Maiden, WASP...
I'll either go for Holydivers of VHIIs.

i would actually go for the Cold sweat for those bands or the MM if you want your tones to have that extra bit of pizazz!

I think the Miracle Man would be spot on for those tones, and you certainly shouldn't find it shrill

that's what i'd have thought, though admittedly i have mine in a mahogany/maple neck-thru V, and haven't tried the other options...

Dave, are you talking about the Miracle Man or the Cold Sweat?

Tim says the MM in a superstrat should deliver early George Lynch tone.

I have a Miracle Man in the bridge of my BC Rich Gunslinger (Alder body, Maple neck/fretboard) and don't find it shrill at all. I was going for a different take on the 80s Rock/Metal tone and as I already had Holydivers in my Ash bodied Patrick Eggle, Tim suggested a Miracle Man for a different 'flavour' and he was spot on  :D

This is the downside of tone charts... they're great if you have a reference point, but for the casual onlooker or new customer, I can see it being a bit "omg how much high end?"

The MM (or cold sweat) are great suggestions. I used the MM in a superstrat for broooootalz, so perhaps the cold sweat might be a better match for the lighter stuff...

If I'm not mistaken you have a Splawn, no? I've got one coming in next week, so I guess we're after the same things tone wise... :)
I've got the HD in a Soloist already. Looks like I'll need to give the MM a go.

Yep. Which is why I tend to trust Tim or Ben's recommendations.
But the MM just conjurs images of Les Pauls in my mind's eye

I really see the Miracle Man as a beefed up Cold Sweat (and I know Tim agrees with me on that). The ceramic magnet does push through more top end than an Alnico, which explains the high rating on the chart, but the MM has a low resonant peak with relatively little upper midrange so the overall voice doesn't sound harsh or thin at all.

Good memory!  :D

I have a 2010 Quick Rod with the FX Loop master control (not all have them). Which Splawn are you getting and what cab/speakers will you be using it with?

It's 1 of the pickiest amps I've ever used for speaker and cab selection  :?

ah sorry, i meant MM

I also have a neck cold sweat in the same guitar (though obviously that's a completely different pickup from the bridge version) :)

yeah, if anything i find mine pretty smooth. And it's definitely 80s in voicing.

that was my first impression as well
I think I called it the 'miracle man and painkiller rebel child' on my review
it was a straight swap in a jap Les Paul copy and the main difference I felt was that the low mids of the MM seemed to move up to the upper mids in the CS, but still far from the midrange overload of the PK
but the lead and pinch harmonic tones are quite unique in each one
the miracle man delivers some really fat sounding pinch harmonics, while the cold sweat sounds very sharp
kinda like comparing Zakk Wylde x Dimebag Darrell or Wolf Hoffmann x Snake Sabo harmonics and lead tones

I have ordered a new Quickrod. Latest specs.
I will be running it through my usual Marshall 1960 cabs with G12T75 speakers. They've always come through for me, no matter what amp I plugged into them.

When I 1st got my QR I was using it with a Marshall 2x12 with the G12T75s in and it sounded awful, all mids and very nasal but with a very shrill top end.

I ended up buying a Zilla Cabs Fatboy 2x12 with V30s and I'm alot happier with it  :)

We'll see how it sounds. Should be OK, as it's in essence a Marshall voiced amp...
I'm not crazy about V30s in general.

Well, it is and it isn't. See how you go :)

I actually wanted a 4x12 with 2 V30s and 2 G12Hs but as I haven't got room for a 4x12, I had to compromise but luckilly it's worked out  :D

I have a mate in Canada who runs his Quickrod through a standard Marshall cab like mine. He plays Charvels and plays the same kind of music. I love his tone.
I think it'll work out :)

That's cool, just saying they didn't work for me is all :)

Cool!

My Ibie S470 with Nailbombs sounded great through the Quick Rod in D standard  :D
