Title: What pup to buy for my NECK pos.
Post by: Norstorm on September 06, 2011, 07:21:16 AM
Hey guys.

I am an 8 string player, and we're starting on our album shortly..
I do have a prob. at hand.

I play a lot like Tosin Abasi, with highly aggressive djent tone on my bridge pup.
But I also do a little tapping, and actualy a lot of classical fingerplaying on my 8 string.
up till now it's been hell to make both presets meet, so I'm thinking about switching to bare knuckles.
Now here's the Q:

An Aftermath 8 for my bridge pos. that's for sure, but what to put on my neck pos. that can sing clean notes clearly, without $%&#ing up the good "balance" between bridge and neck?

keep rocking...

Hmm i arent sure if they make them in 8 string but check out the mississippi Queen its awesome for lush cleans & smooth leads and will easily match volume wise with the aftermath

I'd take the calibrated set

Or maybe a Cold Sweat. Will do great cleans and fluid leads.

Do you know if the neck pup on the calibrated aftermath set will do?? I mean for my thing.. fingerplaying, tapping an so forth..
I'm very picky on my tone..
I found one set though for my 7 strings, and that was actually John Petrucci signature set from DiMarzio. Crunch Lab and Liquifire. Worked perfectly..
But for my 8.. I hear Aftermath rocks while dropped-tuned.

I would definitely recommend the Painkiller neck for Tosin's bright and hollow sounding neck position sound. It's got the snap and definition of a single coil, but with a tight and full low end and a very fluid feel that makes it perfect for what you've described. It also matches very nicely with the Aftermath bridge in output and voicing.
