Title: Guthrie's Cornford vs Suhr tone
Post by: Mesa69 on September 19, 2011, 05:52:55 PM
Hey all I'm new here and thought I would get started by prompting a discussion on Guthrie's recent change from Cornford to Suhr amps. I have heard that Guthrie cut his ties with Cornford as they did not promote his debut album properly.

Guthrie's new side project The Aristocrats released their album on sept the 13th on which Guthrie played through a Suhr and Custom Audio amp (Custom Audio have recently been taken over by Suhr). The news is that Suhr offered to pay for the recording costs to help Guthrie out, as it would be near impossible to recoup the album costs in today’s downloading climate.

I find his Suhr tone to be thick, creamy and very American sounding which is great but not quite rude enough for my tastes. For me I can't get enough of that raunchy Erotic Cakes tone, strident and alive sounding. My vote is Cornford.

If that's the case, I fear Guthrie Govan is spending far too much on recording.

Agree - I do like some of Pete Thorn's work using Custom Audio but Guthrie's style is much more suited to Cornford. I believe he uses a Koko boost with the Badger amp most of the time whereas he generally went straight into his Cornford.

This clip also features Dave Kilminster (another (ex) Cornford user) and to me is much preferable to his CAA sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuPJtyJh3Hk&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BuPJtyJh3Hk&feature=related)

Most of Cornford's endorsers appeared to have jumped ship because of poor (non existant) support particularly when playing outside the UK. Guthrie could not be guaranteed a Cornford amp at all the venues he was playing in the the US whereas Suhr/CAA had outlets in many locations. Similar story with Richie Kotzen (Marshall), Dave Kilminster (Brunetti) and Jamie Humphries (Blackstar...oh dear).

Cornford have obviously struggled to get over the fire which wiped out most of their stock and it appears from a Tweet on July 11th that Paul Cornford is "spending most of my time in hospital".

Oh .. and welcome to the forum !

Is Paul still at the company - I heard he wasn't well too and if you look at his Twitter posts it doesn't do any good for the company at all

My old friend assumption has been my down fall once again, sorry about that. Here is a link to a track from the Aristocrats album  http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=NSVhuZirnhA

and the title track from Erotic Cakes for comparison.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv-fcUPOqOw

Ahh I never realised that, to me his Suhr/Custom Audio tone does sound less raw. Perhaps the extra pedals and leads have something to do with it.

thanks. yeah that does sound a fair bit more modern/brighter/edgier than the cornford tone.

still sounds really good, though different.
