I have just had the most unbelievable week of my life!
One of my clients collects fine art and antiques. I have known him for a few years now and we get on really well.
I was at his villa in France earlier this week and he had an old Gibson. He saw my interest in it and let me have a go.
He really enjoyed my playing and asked if I knew what it was. I said it was an old Gibson Les Paul but couldn't guess the date, maybe 1970's as it looked old.
It was a fricken 1958! We had such a good time jamming later at dinner he offered it to me. Raises some issues re client impartiality lol but man I couldn't refuse. He said he wanted it to go to a player who could really play it and do it justice!
Will get some pics up as soon as I can! Still can't believe it!
-
Err, is it April 1st already?
-
What BKP's you putting in it?
-
Gold top or sunburst?
-
I don't think we can believe it either :o
Where are the pics?
-
Holy moly! Where's Fernando? Pics or it didn't happen!
-
Yes indeed. Pics (and lots of 'em) or it didn't exist.
-
When it's true, it's great of course. Such things somehow never happen to me. :-(
-
Wow! Does he actually know what it could be worth if authentic?
What BKP's you putting in it?
Yeah, and replace all those cr@ppy ole pots and caps as well... better get some locking tuners too... mebbe even whack a trem on it...
-
Not forgetting a refin of course.
-
DIY, obviously... I can recommend Nitromors (in fact, I've still got half a tin I could let you have) :D
-
You must have made him very happy....what sort of 'client' is he!?!? ;)

PICS!
-
Its cool guys I don't expect anyone to believe me! All that matters is I am totally stoked.
Will get some pics up as soon as I get a chance. I have been advised not to show the serial number but it is inked stamped and starts with that A!
-
If true you will have insurance & tax issues, so just show us the insurance certificate and then we will believe it!
-
Just checked the kitchen, plenty of salt here if anyone needs a pinch.
-
Interesting story ,like winning the EuroMillions 8)!

If the s/n starts with a A,it's not a original '58 LP.Weird :?! PS:whatever it is,you're damn lucky :)!
-
Well I sincerely hope it is true because after all we are talking about THE holy grail guitar here and it'd be nice for a mere mortal to acquire one. You'll have to forgive us our skepticism though until some sort of proof arrives.

Must be the week for it, I was telling my milk man about wanting a new car and he said he had an old thing sitting in his garage and do it want it, well it only turned out to be a '66 Ford Mustang and he'd left his life savings in the boot. When I told him about it he said just to keep it, his mistake and all, plus property is nine tenths of the law, go figure. He even put a full tank of petrol in it for the inconvenience.

That's nothing!
I was staggering home from the pub last night and I was stood at the crossroads waiting for the light to change...
It was taking forever and I really needed a p1ss.. so I undid my fly and let go on the lampost...
Just then an old black gentleman with a devilish smile approached me...
I thought "oh not again, I'm not shagging any hobos tonight"...
The man said "Son, I don't want your dong... I want your soul" ... So I was about to tell him to F**k off and then I realised I had no cash left and really fancied a Kebab.
So, I said "what will you give me for it"
He said "Name your price!"
So I left with a 58 Les Paul, a 12 inch dong, a chicken doner and 20 cigs!!!!
I've also woken up with an itchy rash but I didn't ask him for that.... :(
-

A '58 serial number would be of the form "8 xxxx"...

Now that is one damn nice car!
It actually makes me have a tiny bit of interest in driving

Today the girl I secretly love but am too shy to talk to made the first move!

When in doubt, whip it out.

Oh don't start posting pictures of 'stangs. I've had a particularly bad day at work and am now jonesing to p-ex the Westie for an interesting convertible of some sort. The westie is a bit redundant, so I'm fancying something a little more classy. This is what I would have gone to look at today had I not been stuck in work for 14 f**king hours!

Seeing as we're drifting off-topic completely (not that I'm sure this thread was ever on it).

Funny thing happened to me this morning, I was driving Scarlett Johansson back from Aldi in my Ferrari Enzo when I bumped into Jimi Hendrix.

Rubbish!
I happen to know for a FACT that Scarlett only shops at Lidl.
-
You know NOTHING, Ms Johansson is particularly fond of Aldi own brand pork scratchings.
-
Yesterday I bumped into Papadopoulos en he offered me Greece for only 0,99 quid. :)

Well there's no need to start throwing wild unsubstantiated claims round is there?

Beware of Greeks bearing gifts!

Odysseus gave me a golden tripod the other day, as it happens.

I want that back, been asking for ages.

Always the businessman, eh? Asking for prices way higher than market value and all...

With the serial number starting "A..."? What a swine, said he got it in Phaeacia.

The longer this thread goes on the more I start to lose belief.

I do really hope it is true! I just want to know!!!!
-
It's clearly a load of bull, as the OP has probbaly been researching '59s and realising that's not what he's been given...
-
Rubbish, that '58 simply sustains for days. Shortly after posting this thread he picked up his new love and hit an open E...BRANG!!!!!
3 days later it's still resonating, he's probably cought in a sustain and tone induced trance.
-
bumping this for 1958 Les Paul pics
-
your avatar adds a nice touch to that comment! especially if you read and then look after.

Guys - we may ALL be wrong on this one (as amusing as this thread has been in places)
I checked some info from Gibson's website http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/ (http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Support/SerialNumberSearch/)
The top link gives a downloadable article on serial numbers
An extract from that PDF on Gibson Serial Numbers reads:
From 1970-1975 the method of serializing instruments at Gibson became even more random. All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix. The orange labels inside hollow bodied instruments was discontinued in 1970 and were replaced by white and orange rectangle labels on the acoustics, and small black, purple and white rectangle labels were placed on electric models.
In 1970, the words "MADE IN USA" was impressed into the back of instrument headstocks (though a few instruments from the 1950s also had MADE IN USA impressed into their headstocks as well).
Year(s)
1970, 1971, and 1972 1973 1974 and 1975
Approximate Series Manufacture
100000s, 600000s, 700000s, 900000s 000001s, 100000s, 200000s, 800000s and a few “A” + 6 digit numbers 100000s, 200000s, 300000s, 400000s,500000s, 600000s, 800000s and a few A-B-C-D-E-F + 6 digit numbers
So the guitar may well be a 70s Les Paul which is a nice thing to be given and actually what the OP thought the guitar was in the first place...........
However there is a slight difference in value if sold
