Title: VHII Bridge - Dokken Riffage - Modded Marshall
Post by: Bainzy on January 23, 2006, 06:56:52 PM
Here's something I recorded tonight, with the extra gain stage I designed engaged. The gain is just below 8. The gain stage has a JJ ECC83S in it's tube socket. I'm loving the tone on this clip, it's so thick yet cutting, totally 80s hair metal.

I've just played what I can remember 'In My Dreams' going like, so it's not exactly like the record. I just set a drum loop going and rocked out!

The PPIMV is on about 2, and it's bedroom volumes - my cat didn't jump off my bed or show any general concern at the sound level like it usually does when it's getting a bit loud, so that shows that the volume level wasn't loud at all. The mic is aimed at one of the G12M's in the 1960A, same setup as the Power Rangers clip pretty much.

Hope you like the clip!

awesome tone my man!
Can the mod be done to any older style marshall? I have a Master series 50watt 2204 (1977).

Should work fine on that - it'd have 1 more gain stage after the mod than the amp in my clip though. If you wanted you could rearrange the circuit on that amp so the gain stage a 2204 has additional to a 1987, is actually the same as the extra gain stage I've engaged in the clip. I'd feel reluctant to add an extra preamp tube in a vintage amp though, as it would probably damage the value quite a bit.

wasn't it the Transformers soundtrack that featured a track called "you got the touch" (or something similar) that was used in the film Boogie Nights when Dirk wanted to be a rockstar?

Is that double tracked or delay?? I'd love to hear it dry.....sounds thick, great hot rod tone....

It's double tracked - you should be able to hear each track individually if you load up media player's EQ settings and set the slider to the left or the right. Near the end you can tell it's double tracked as one track plays chord fragments while the other plays power chords, then one track lets ring an E power chord and the other track plays C5, D5 and E5.

It sounded a bit overpowering when I recorded it dry so I put some plate reverb on both tracks and the drums to make it blend in a bit more.

Bainzy you seem to have recording down to a fine art. I was wondering if you could tell me how you record please, also is that drumkit from hell?

Also you know about amps right, I own a 5150 and I'd like it to sound tighter more like a hot rodded marshall. I was thinking of turning the gain down and using some kind of drive pedal. See to my ears 5150 is used mostly just NU metal and modern mega distorsion music I'm trying to get something close to George Lynch DOkken and Vito Bratta Tone.

The key to this sortof tone is mids - if your 5150 doesn't have enough mids when it's mid control is on 10, you could look into getting an EQ pedal or a mid booster in your guitar. The OD pedal method might also work really well for this kindof tone, provided it has a decent midrange emphasis and doesn't scoop the mids, as if it scooped them you'd end up with a nu-metal tone all over again.

The recording setup isn't really that advanced - it's budget home recording gear on the most part. Here's the signal chain:

Shure SM57 is aimed at the bottom right G12M at an angle of about 45 degrees, the signal is then fed into a Behringer MIC100 tube preamp which can be bought for £30 - excellent piece of kit. It really removes the sterile sound of the digital recorder, and the phase reversal switch is a great - without it due to frequencies cancelling the tone sounds thin. Then the signal is fed into a BOSS BR1200CD, and I've used a 1 bar drum pattern looped infinitely. The drums were EQ'd and had reverb added to sound more realistic.

The guitar sound when recorded had (simulated) plate reverb added to all tracks, and the rhythm guitar was recorded in 2 stages. I recorded it once, then recorded it again. The first recorded track was panned 40% left and the other 40% right - this makes it sound much more representative of how it actually sounds in the room.

It's not a serious clip, it's just something I played as a means of showing to my mate Niczy how the tube mic preamp sounds with the amp as it is now, so I thought I'd share it so you guys can hear how the pickup sounds too.

Definitely a big, 80s stadium rock sound. Great demo for this pickup!

Dude no offence but that is not a simple recording process, You got a mic and a few other toys going on there. I mean Im a mere mortal I got an amp and a PC.

Im thinking about going the THD hotplate thingie and going into a redbox, its all about low volume recording to me. no mics, I dunno what u rekon?
