Post by: Woahohoh on October 20, 2011, 12:27:05 AM
Hey guy was looking for a versatile pup that could do hard rock(mr big) to blues (john Mayer) sounds rather insane doesn't it? was wondering if anyone could share some insight?

Well, I think it is not that insane...Gilbert often playes kinda bluesy (and his live tone was just amazing).

Question is, are you talking about sinlge coils or humbuckers.

I would assume SC as the two you named use SCs. For that the Irish Tour or the Slowhand (the vintage hot range basecally) will probably be a good bet. The character fits and the rest will mostly be the amps gain to get the sound from Mayer to the more gainy saturated Gilbert.

For humbuckers, the answer is probably the Mule.  That's what Tim Mills himself has said is his favourite.

If you're talking humbuckers Mules can do that, but even the VHII is worth to look at, cause it's cleans up great and will provide then belllike cleans with a hint of a singlecoil. It depends however in which guitars/woods.
