Title: First post! BKP selection for PRS
Post by: dingleberry on October 21, 2011, 06:19:08 PM
Hi all,

First post, wondering about which pickups for my PRS sc245.  Here's a pic of my rig :

Nothing special but I really like it  :).  I play in a metal band but my rig is designed to be pretty versatile, I use a lot of  tones in our set.   I'm currently using seymour duncan AHB-3s, great sounding and surprisingly versatile, but the tone changes too much as the battery gets used up.

From the sound clips I really liked the : Black Dog, Cold Sweat, Nailbomb, Miracle Man, Holydiver.  So, which BKPs do you guys recommend?

Thanks

Yes of course, we play pretty thrashy stuff, but with a lot of groove and death flavour.  Plus the occasional breakdown and maiden style harmony just for kicks.

This is our youtube channel if you check out the track 'Never Again' this seems to be the direction our writing is going in.  Thanks for any suggestions.

hey man thanks for the link-well a wide number of pickups could give you what u want.
A good all rounder is the Nailbomb, you could either go ceramic or alnico depending on what you like-i have a ceramic nailbomb set and love it. The Miracleman is well spoken about in this forum, has a very healthy output but can have quite a scooped sound. Also theres the Aftermath-which is a mid monster  and also really tight. And of course the Coldsweat, which is suposedly awesome-ill be getting it next week so would be able to give u more of a lowdown then.
For your stuff -at the moment- i would personally go Nailbomb.
Just some more questions:
-What tuning do u guys use?
-What are the woods in your guitar?
Cheers

We play mostly Eb with the occasional drop C#.  My guitar is a PRS SC245, thick mahogany body, flame maple top, fat mahogany neck, rosewood board, 24.5" scale

Ok sounds cool-a dark-ish guitar tone wise, so id say either Ceramic Nailbomb or Coldsweat :-)

Nailbomb really sound great in drop tunings, I recently installed Alnico Nailbomb in the bridge of my PRS Custom 22, and Cold Sweat in the neck. Very common, almost classic combo here :)
Lowest tuning I play is D, and Nailbomb delivers punch and aggression, without being muddy or flabby.
Cold Sweat is amazing flid neck pickup, crunchy under good ammount of gain, and very bluesy, when you roll down volume and tone :)

I had a CE-22 (maple neck) with a custom shop duncan scott ian el diablo, and everytime I played it, she screamed "buy me a $%&#in' nailbomb, bitch!"
also had a beaten up mccarty that sounded absolutely great with the riff raff
best sounding guitar I ever had
the other mccarty I had would probably sound better with a holy diver, maybe an abraxas or crawler

Hey all,

I've been emailing the staff at BKP, and have narrowed it down to a few different combos :

1) C-bomb bridge, CS neck
2) A-bomb bridge, CS neck
3) A-bomb set

Any experiences with these sets in a LP style guitar?  Specifically CS neck vs NB neck and C-bomb vs A-bomb bridge?

I'd say A-Bomb/CS-neck (does fluid leads very nice, lots of users stated).
