So, which ones? I was thinking of either a painkiller or coldsweat set, but I'l afraid that I don't tune down enough to make them "sound good" (drop C max). Which of the modern pickups could hang in standard just as well? Rebel Yell? Thanks once again for the advice... I'm already between two pickups, so let's make it three!! :p

All the "fatter" sounding ones should work well, as opposed to those that sound very tight or bright, as should the vintage voiced ones.
I think the Painkiller is the only I've heard it sounds better downtuned.

Hmm, so the PK for sure doesn't sound good in standard / dropped a tad? well that proabably rules it out entirely, then! I have an AM in drop C which sounds intense, but I might start doing more standard E tunings (been listening to too much Dillinger Escape Plan).
Anywho... more input would be awesome!

Well for starters: What guitar have you got, and what genres of music will you be playing?

stuff like Converge / DEP / Shai Hulud and lots of hardcore. Also some Pablo Gilberto meedles here and there.
Guitar this would be going into is an Ibanez SV-420 (thin mahogany body, maple neck, vintage trem that's going to get locked) running into a Mesa Mk2c+ and a Port City OS 212.

My Miracle Man sounds great for that stuff. It really covers everything from the 80s to the present. But it depends if you want more of that mid hump?

I use Miracle Men & Aftermaths in the bridges of my guitars and the lowest i tune is D standard/drop C and they sound excellent.
I actually find the aftermath sounds far better in higher tunings than it does low

I'm rather surprised you said the AM sounds good in standard... I heard on this board that the AM and PK don't really open up until you drop a couple steps.
I thought the MM has a weird scoop/high peak going on... very Zack Wylde? if so... nooooo, haha.

THey dont seem like they will work in higher tunings but they do extremely well i find theyre fuller, punchier & have a hell of a lot more clarity
And i would say the miracle man is more just a general 80s metal sound more than a zakk wylde kinda thing it can just do that also

Yh, I agree with Toe-Knee's comment above. A lot of people only think of Zakk Wylde because of the name, and the fact Tim has demo'd some Zakk Wylde clips. Best way to describe to Miracle Man is 'Everything you wish your EMG was'.

And if you need that extra output, buy yourself a bloody EQ/Pre-Amp switch. Walah! ;). I use a TS9 to drive my amp neways, so I can't tell the difference between my MM and EMGs (in terms of Output). I just have that added advantage of it being much more versatile than the EMG, I don;t have the EQ/Pre-Amp turned ON constantly

There must be some strong personal opinons being talked on this forum that I have missed out on - and then being repeated by others who haven't tried these items out for themselves.
Most of the BKP pickups sound awesome tuned to regular tuning - especially when on the right guitar
I never play below drop-D or D standard and 99% of the time my guitars are all in regular E tuning and I have never had any problems with any of the pickups.
Having said that I can see that ones that I found didn't sound so good in a particular guitar at that tuning but sounded fab in another guitar may well have responded to a lower tuning & heavier strings better in the first guitar.
So for example your Nailbomb may sound too muddy in your Les paul but sound fantastic in your superstrat.
It is dangerous to write off pickups that you didn't like in a particular guitar assuming that they don't cut it when in a different guitar they would sound awesome.
I recently had a set of Aftermaths in my Ibanez S470 and I wasn't too fussed on the sound but switched over to Painkillers and it was fab ( I will put the aftermaths up in seconds out shortly)
Sadly sometimes you have to experiment a little to find the ultimate killer sound
One persons experience with a set may differ wildly from your own experience as
1 they had them in a different guitar or different type of guitar
2 what they like in a guitar's sound may be very different to what you like
3 they used a very different amp to you
4 they play at a louder or quieter volume to you
For my own personal tastes I like Miracle Man, Cold Sweat, and Painkiller sets, along with Mississippi Queens, Mules, VH2s and Stormy Mondays, and have a liking for Emeralds, Crawlers, Abraxas too.

Well shite. Comments like this make me want to just buy random pickups and experiment.
I might try the PK first, or maybe CS.... hmmm.

Ok, so the more I think about it, I might try the MM. I REALLY like the Steve's Special in my MM JP, which seems to have a similar EQ style/output as the MM (albeit in a basswood body).
Thoughts?
EDIT: After reading so much praise for the RY and the fact that it gets so many awesome overtones and a more organic sound, I'm leaning on maybe trying them out; I'm not sure how they'd do in a very thin mahogany body, but the same goes for all the other pickups!
Now, I've successfully gone from wanting PK's, VHII's, CS's, MM's, and RY's in this guitar. I might as well just put it up to a vote!
