Hello.
Just thought I'd do a quick thread about a new guitar I picked up a few days ago out of the blue :D
I've always been a fan of Vs and Explorers but have never been able to comfortably play an Explorer due to my being short and relatively fat as the body dwarfs me and I can't wear them low enough to sit right while still being able to reach the strings. I have a similar problem with Vs but have managed to more or less make that work.
I was passing a small music shop while out shopping and noticed a worn Cherry Red Epiphone Firebird Studio in the window so thought I'd nip in for a look. After a quick tune up and getting the neck pickup to work, it needed some switch cleaner as it obviously hadn't been played for a bit, I gave it a run through and must say I was pleasantly surprised. It's alot heavier than I was expecting and seems quite resonant aswell. The body is advertised as all Mahogany, which would explain the weight, but it wasn't as dark sounding acoustically as I thought it would be.
They also seem to have improved the stock Epi pickups from when I had my Epi LP Standard a while ago as the 1s in this guitar were nowhere near as bland, dull and muffled sounding as the 1s that came in my LP.
Apart from needing a setup to get rid of some sharp fret ends and to get the action down a bit I'm more than happy with it.
Here's a quick pic.

Congrats on the new guitar! Enjoy :D

Congreats on the new guitar! Enjoy :D

Looks deelish. I've always liked that shape, it's got a funky craziness about it. If I remember rightly Gibson got a car designer in to do it. If it was mine it put a T/shell guard on it to make it look really rich and individual. Any plans for BKP's?

nice :D

Cheers guys :D
It's a bit of a departure for me shape wise, I usually just stick to LPs/Strats/Teles/PRS etc, but fancied something a bit different so thought I'd pick it up.

I'm sure it'll get BKPs at some point, but as I have no current plan of what I want the guitar to be, I can't really decide on pickups yet
I have a Super Distortion knocking around that I took out of my BC Rich Gunslinger before it got it's Miracle Man, so I may slap that in for a bit and see how it fares.

Nice :) Firebirds are awesome. I thought about getting one but I'm not cool enough to pull it off - same goes for vees and explorers
-
nice I keep looking at these

Cool guitar mate, surprise new guitar days are always fun!

Nice guitar! Congrats. :)

Nice :D
All of us trad strat/tele/LP/etc guys have to find at least one groovy shaped guitar so that we can, er, look groovy...
These are growing on me, but the shape doesn't quite do it for me on a six string (I've looked at basses though). I prefer the explorer for the six string, and when I finally decided to get one I found that I can just about carry the look off (although I've never been seen in public with it ).

Cheers guys, it's growing on me more and more as I play it. I'm thinking a set of Emeralds might be a good pairing for it

Oh, I'm in no way cool enough too pull off a V, Firebird or Explorer but thought I'd give it a go as it was cheap

cool guitar!

Nice score matey - they're definitely a piece of retro cool. I reckon a set of Riff Raffs would set it off a treat ;)

I used to have the Gibson US version - the Epi looks pretty much identical apart from the finish, very nice! 8)
Nice guitars, and they don't feel too big or heavy for a smaller person! :D
-
Awesome. I've always fancied one of those myself.

Cheers guys.
I've been talking to a few people regards pickups for it and I've had several suggestions, but there's no rush as I can't afford anything yet after the weekend I've just had

It's not really that I'm a 'smaller' person per se, more that my gut gets in the way so a bigger bodied guitar just doesn't sit right
I'm normally a LP player so don't mind a heavier guitar for the most part.

It's funny, I always used to find that with LPs - the thick body plus my protruding belly made them feel really awkward.
Now I'm skinny, I'm finding LPs a lot more comfortable (so long as they're not too heavy).

I have a dangerous thread coming up for you soon Philly - new Lion Cub being built

I'll approach that thread with cross, garlic and holy water to be on the safe side....
I WILL buy one, one day - if I can ever think of something to celebrate or some kind of landmark event. I do often think about design details, but I flit back and forth between just a slimmed-down, streamlined but fairly conventional LP/Lion or something a bit different.

No sweat - just teasing really, although I enjoy your input and feedback
It's a Lion Cub in the Gibson Les Paul Junior mode : Dot inlays, no binding, wraparound bridge , P90
but
Sperzel (non locking) tuners, Earvana nut, All access neck joint, Mississippi Queen pickup, Tonepros wraparound with intonatable saddles, BKP 550k pots and Jensen /BKP 0.015uF oil & paper cap

I'm looking forward to seeing that one.

Sounds great! :D
I think I probably have enough P-90 guitars (so that'll help me resist temptation), but very interested to see the Feline take on the concept!!
