Title: Zvex SHO Clone build complete!
Post by: Transcend on October 29, 2011, 01:38:30 PM
I got bored so i messed around with some spare bits and pieces that i had kicking around and knocked up a zvex SHO based pedal.

this is a 100% DIY build :P

Its messy but why should i make it tidy with the enclosure.....

Its a pretty cool little pedal i do need to get a 3pdt switch though as im getting a little bit of bleed when the pedal is off which gives me a nice crackly clean :D

I just looked up the schematic for that - 5 resistors, couple of caps, a diode and a transistor. Doesn't get much simpler than that, how's the sound?

It sounds pretty great. I've always been a fan of simple approaches when it comes to tone and this is one of those cases where i find less is more.

it works as a great clean boost up until about 50% of the travel of the knob then after that it starts adding the grit & grind in.

The one i did is based on the modular SHO for the inventobox the schem is on the Zvex site

I'm actually going to plan some kinda clips for this out and get them done either tonight or tomorrow.

I've got to figure out what will bring out the best in it as this pedal is quite different to what i've used in the past

They work really well after fuzzes for thickening them up.

If only someone could build a fuzz pedal with a switchable SHO built in

*rubs chin* I wonder what it'd look like...

Been a long time since I made one of those. Still one of my favorite pedals.

Ever the salesman!

Unfortunately at the moment I have zero cash to spend on guitar related stuff  :(  Perhaps in a year or so I'll be in a better position (at least I hope I will be!)

Apologies for the mini thread hijack.

Well I decided to build a SHO today as I was inspired by this thread. Had all but Q1 laying around so why not? Decided to stick it in a 1590A that I demolished and polished a week or so ago. Battery doesn't fit in there, it's only powered by the DC jack at the top end. 3 LEDS for the indicator. Internal trim pot set for a "a little more." Pretty straightforward build and a good boost too.

That is awesome. I guess you did the slots with a grinder?

Thanks, Tony.  :D
The slots were done with a 12" metal chop saw, but the radius didn't cut through the middle. It left troughs more or less. Sprayed it all down with acrylic, picked the paint out of the troughs, poked some holes on the sides and dunked it in  a ferric chloride/hydrochloric acid bath for about 20 mins. Finished the slots out with a dremel wheel. The led diffuser is a piece of clear packaging, sanded with 300 on both sides and held up by the foot switch. Without it, it looked a little cheap. Didn't have the "reactor meltdown" effect I had imagined.
