Title: Albums that you enjoy in every way
Post by: Transcend on October 31, 2011, 03:56:52 PM
Well i was walking today and listening to Battering Ram by Iron Savior

and released that this is the only album that i have bought that has been released in the last decade or so that i enjoy every single aspect of.

Does anyone else have an album like this?

i could knock up a list like this but i meant within the last decade as there has been a very obvious decline in musical quality.

you have some very good choices there though

except for the drum solo

+1, even if I did like the drum solo at one time.

Speaking of Deep Purple I think the Made in Europe - that was with the Mk III line up - is a killer album as well.

Cheers Stephan

The Sword - Age of Winters
Airbourne - Running' Wild
Bert Jansch - Black Swan

Are the very guitar centric ones that immediately spring to mind.

EDIT to make it albums of the last ten years

it would be cheap to say the first 6 Black Sabbath albums - we all know about those.

But how about:

UFO - Strangers In The Night
Scorpions - Crazy World
Scorpions - Tokyo Tapes
Accept - Balls To The Wall (except Jonathan already picked that one!)
Rainbow - Rising
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Diamond Head - The White Album

I would not wish to change a track on any of these classics

(edit: just realised theres Flying Vs on all but one of those choices!)

Ooops... Didn't notice the "last decade" bit :?
So, since 2000 or thereabouts... Hmmm... Let me get back to you...

Firebird. Bill Steer's band. The debut and Grand Union are amazing. The other albums aren't half bad but those two stick out for me.

Halford's Resurrection. Killer slab of metal.

Dee Snider - Never Let The B*st*rds Wear You Down.

Rose Tattoo - 25 To Life.

That's just 2000.
More recent releases include Steel Panther's debut, Overkill's Ironbound and Motörhead's The World Is Yours.

It is quite obvious that none of these bands are spring chickens... Once the big metal bands start calling it quits, the future's looking dire.

I agree. Haven't heard The Hunter yet. Mastodon is one of the rare relatively young bands I really dig.

Robin Trower - Live!
Circle of Soul - Hands of Faith and One Man's Poison
Trouble - Manic Frustration
Spiritual Beggars - On Fire
Wishbone Ash - Just Testing
Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
Saigon Kick - Saigon Kick and The Lizard
King's X - Out of the Silent Planet
Warrior Soul - Last Decade Dead Century
Living Colour - Vivid
Corrosion Of Conformity - Deliverance
Masters Of Reality - The Blue Garden
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow
Kansas - Leftoverture and Point of Know Return
Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow
AC/DC - Powerage
Stone Gossard - Bayleaf
Rush - Permanent Waves
Mountain - Nantucket Sleighride
Headpins - Turn It Loud
Coney Hatch - Coney Hatch
Galactic Cowboys - Galactic Cowboys
Def Leppard - High 'n' Dry
Tesla - The Great Radio Controversy
Raging Slab - Raging Slab
Anthrax - Stomp 442
Y&T - Earthshaker, Black Tiger and Meanstreak

Oh blimey, that was like turning on a tap.  Sorry.

I like most of those bands anyway, but those particular albums are all killer, no filler.

Sorry I've ignored the bit about the last decade - but everyone else did too.  I do like Mastodon.  And Evanescence.

off the top of my head, winger in the heart of the young ( ) and extreme pornograffiti. they're about the only two i can think of where it's good the whole way through. maybe appetite for destruction by guns n roses.

does the four seasons by vivaldi count as an album?

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik
Scorpions - Fly To The Rainbow
Kansas - Leftoverture and Point of Know Return
Scorpions - Fly to the Rainbow

Fly To The Rainbow twice Philly? Is it that good?

I must admit that I'm a little surprised that you have BSSM in there - this is the album that got me into RHCP and Frusciante in particular. A lot of their other stuff is hit and miss although I do love By The Way and Stadium Arcadium.

The Black Crowes - Amorica - I can't get enough of this album, everything (to me) is perfect, the songs are beautifully written & playing is amazing. This was the album that showed Marc Ford & Rich Robinson at the height of their country/blues finesse.

Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman - some of the most delicately written songs ever

Cry of love - Brother - welcome back blues based rock, this was one of the albums that made me want to play

I've got increasingly disenchanted with the RHCP, but I absolutely love BSSM - in some ways they've become better songwriters subsequently, but they've lost so much of the energy they had before.

Cry of Love - Brother

I nearly put that in my list, but it was getting so long...

Mhhh good question...I can think of a few (most even from the last decade-ish). Many not metal or even guitar heavy...not what most people would expect from me. But I kinda guess the summ of our most beloved albums (or music) gives us a good view of what musicians we are...in a way at least.
And I am one sick $%&# xD

Wall of text inc:

Protest the Hero - Kezia (non stop full power and emotion)
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs (every one is so $%&#ing amazing)
4Lyn - 4Lyn
Bob Dylan - The freewheelin´Bob Dylan
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever ago
Peter Gabriel - Scratch my Back (so many tears shed through the album...)
Depeche Mode - Violator
Dream Theater - Metropolis part II: Scenes from a Memory
Fall out boy - From under the Cork Tree
Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

Garfunkle and Oats - Music Songs (just amazing fun)
In Flames - Reroute to Remain (best album they ever did)
Johnny Cash - The Man that comes around
Jónsi - Go (such an amazing artist, words don´t do him justice)
Keane - Hopes and Fears
KoRn - Unplugged
Machine Head - Through the Ashes of Empires
My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade
My Chemical Romance - Three Cheers for sweet Revenge
Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

Nine Inch Nails - Year Zero
Pink Floyd - Wish you were here
Radiohead - The Bends
Robyn - Body Talk (yes, really)
Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (just  beauty on cd)
The Talles Man on Earth - The Wild Hunt
Trivium - In Waves
Volbeat - Rock the Rebell / Metal the Devil (this baby on good old vinyl....yeah!)
Wilco - Wilco

I'm not gonna wheel out the old favourites, but instead list some more recent albums that come damn close to being perfect...

* Black Spiders - Sons Of The North
* Glasvegas - Glasvegas
* The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar
* The Union - The Union
* PJ Harvey - Stories From The City....

Ok, so PJ Harvey's album is from a while back, but its just amazing so fu*ck it.

If we're doing that, then Beethoven's Piano Sonata Number 8 (Pathetique) and Schubert's Trout Quintet are two of my all time favourite pieces from start to finish. I can't play the Pathetique flawlessly yet, but I'll hopefully get there this year. I know it now and can muddle my way through.

yeah seventeen kinda kills the first one for me o_O Killer solo, terrible choice of lyrics o_O Also I just think i like the second album better, too.

Oh and this might be controversial, but chinese democracy is actually really good (since I mentioned appetite for destruction). I know it took forever to make... but if taking 10 years to make an album guaranteed as good a one as that, I'd say all bands should consider it

Oh and kiss crazy crazy nights is pretty good all the way through

I'm not so fond of beethoven's piano stuff (apart from the moonlight, which is awesome), but his symphonies are just sublime. I guess the 6th would qualify for "good all the way through", as well.

The trout is awesome, I think i prefer schubert's unfinished symphony, though.

Yeah, I can't remember who plays on which tracks, but the lead guitar on the album is divided up between Buckethead, Robin Finck and Ron Thal.

^ yeah. I think it's mainly buckethead and finck, thal only gets to play on a couple of songs (which is a shame, as thal kicks ass). But finck is actually really good, i prefer his solos to buckethead's, I think.

I'll stretch it a bit farther back than the last decade.

Guy Forsyth - Love songs for and against. If you haven't heard it go get it now.
All three RATM albums with original material.
RHCP - Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik
Keith Caputo - Died Laughing
Goldfinger - Hang Ups
Bon Jovi - Blaze of Glory (Young Guns II soundtrack)
Kashmir - Travelogue
Beastie Boys - Check Your Head
Snoop Dogg - Doggy Style
Blue Junction - 22:17 Live in Aarhus
More or less all the albums Incubus have done.

i like Chinese Democracy too!  think it's a seriously high quality record.  it was just inevitable that, no matter how good it was, it was going to be a letdown after 17 years.  maybe this is the beginning of the backlash against the backlash!  :P

^

For me it wasn't even close to a letdown, it was about 100 times better than I expected - on first listen I would go so far as to say I was amazed!  But then I wasn't a massive fan of the band - I never even bought Use Your Illusion.

And I think some people just set against it because it didn't have Slash on it - which doesn't bother me in the slightest, personally.

i really like gnr, but as i only really found them later after they'd split up, i probably wasn't as invested in them as some of the people who'd been fans from day 1.

I mean, I like slash, but it doesn't worry me that slash isn't there as long as there's good guitar playing (and good songs). I mean ron thal is a way better player than slash, imo.

and i'd agree... the fact everyone had been saying it was a letdown meant i was pleasantly surprised by it.

In The last 10 years:

Separation Sunday and Boys & Girls in America
The Hold Steady
Two of the best rock records of all time- great riffs, great songs and the lyrics are gorgeous.
They really work as proper albums too- the flow from the almost spoken word and organ of "crucifixion cruise" into the riff of "how a resurrection really feels" is truly sublime.

Elephant
The White Stripes
The guitar work on "Ball and Biscuit" is as good as anything by Jimi. Perhaps the earlier albums had better highlights (Raucous cover of "Death letter" and the menacing slide of "little bird" being great tracks off de stijl) but Elephant was the only one that was truly dazzling end to end (devoid of the uninspired rambles which punctuated their earlier work).

Funeral
The Arcade Fire
Intelligent and energetic. Perfect.

In Rainbows
Radiohead
Their simplest and most beautiful set of tracks to date.

Josh Pearson
Last of the Country Gentlemen
Well, it's country. And four of the songs run over 10 minutes. But they're sung with so much feeling; I've never heard a man sounds so sorry, or broken. I don't listen to it all that often but when I do I put aside an hour for listening to it end to end.

and Finally...
Whatever people say I am that's what I'm not
Arctic Monkeys
Or maybe it's just because I grew up with it. I love all of these songs. 2006 was a good year.

* PJ Harvey - Stories From The City....

Ok, so PJ Harvey's album is from a while back, but its just amazing so fu*ck it.

I love that album.  But struggle with some of her other stuff.

Yep, me too. I think Let England Shake is massively, massively overrated. More so than Exile on Main Street.

same here, all her other albums have flashes of brilliance - To Bring You My Love for example is an excellent song, but not so struck on the rest of the album.

Every Time I Die - The Big Dirty
Blur - Blur
The Bronx II
Blink 182 - Enema Of The State
Touche Amore - ...to the beat of a dead horse
Fugazi - Red Medicine
GnR - AFD
Down - NOLA

All of those are "all killer no filler" type albums for me! Both song-wise and production wise.

Finally! I've found someone else who loves The Hold Steady! "How a Resurrection Really Feels" always gives me goose bumps as does "Killer Parties". Great stuff and a hugely underrated band IMO. I also love Stay Positive - another great collection of songs with a narrative to them that continues the theme from their other albums. Very clever writing throughout and songs with a real energy to them.

I'm not so convinced about Heaven is Whenever. I felt they lost a lot when Franz left the band.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers, Live at Fillmore East

A work of absolute undiluted genius from beginning to end, there's nothing even remotely weak on the whole album

I could have typed that myself! totally agree on all points.
Like the other albums, heaven is whenever grew on me after seeing it performed live but it's not up there with the first four. I LOVE closing my eyes and listening to any of the first three all the way through; reaching killer parties and being hit by a wave of innocence lost/nostalgia/ can't quite place finger on it. Such a powerful song! Likewise resurrection, as it fades out leaving just the glockenspiel... a really beautiful moment.

Agree on Franz too. The sound as a whole holds together but without touches like the run up the scale under "but she did and she got sick/ now she's pinned and way too shaky" on chillout tent and the pounding keys just before "we drink and we dry up and then we crumble into dust" in stuck between stations, they're missing a really crucial tool in their armoury. But I reckon that Heaven is whenever is a bit transitional, Craig Finn is such an incredible lyricist and songwriter I'm sure that there's more to come. If I ever write a lyric half as evocative as the middle eight in chillout tent I'll be very happy indeed.

I love that band, like a cross between Springsteen & Gaslight Anthem, speaking of which:
Gaslight Anthem - American Slang. How I forgot this album I don't know, this takes everything that was great on 59 sound & cranks it! They casually grow in song-writing terms while adding new parts like jazzy blues & such. Brilliant

Sound like I need "American Slang" then!

"'59 Sound" is one of my favourite albums of all time, to be honest.

A lot of people give 10,000 Days shite, but I"m 100% with you on it. Brilliant album.

I must say actually...

Deathspell Omega - "FAS - Ite, Maledicti In Ignem Aeternum".

I can't quite put words to how much I love this album. The sheer expansiveness, depth and artistic vision of it is staggering. The execution of it is nigh-on flawless in terms of creating the most positively apocalyptic atmosphere I've ever witnessed in an album. This is truly the soundtrack of the end times.

Check out The Horrible Crows - Elsie
Brian Fallon's side band....It's a slow and stripped down Gaslight

As for my list, if your into rocking folk music... I must say
Any album from The Avett Brothers is phenomenal...The one that broken them into a bigger following was Emotionalism.  Its a great album from beginning to end.  Great tunes and great lyrics...

Langhorne Slim's Self-titled and Be Set Free albums are also great..
