Title: Nuts!
Post by: horsehead on October 31, 2011, 05:34:34 PM
I've just got a new tele & the nut on it is rather fcuked so I want to start doing something like this myself. According to the specs it's a 9.5" radius with 41mm width & was thinking of putting an earvana one in, but from what I can see they are either that size but with a radius of 7.25" or 12" so do I need to use the 7.25" one? or shall I just buy a piece of bone & sand it down to what I need?

you can buy one of the other sizes and reshape as needed,  rather than start from scratch

problem is that they are all pre-cut so if I get the 43mm  surely the spacing will be incorrect?

Sadly the two radii that are available for the shelf nut for 41mm are 7.25" and 12" (which is a modified Gibson/ESP shelf nut if the truth be known)

The only 9.5" radius is the 1 11/16 width one but the string spacing of that may be a touch wide
It has a string spacing of 35.43 compared to the narrower spacing of 34.0

You'd have to gauge for yourself if the neck is a wide 41mm or definitely on the skinny side of 41mm

The other option that I have done and it works well is choose to use the LSR roller nut replacement , but it meant that I had to cut a bit more fingerboard away as if i was fitting a roller nut - we keep an LSR replacement that is 1 5/8 and has a string spacing of 34.5mm

ahhh bollocks to it, measured it and it's a tight 41mm, guess it's time to buy a bone!

the retrofit version will fit but it's the one with the 3 screws
