I am considering buying a new 100 watt valve amp sometime in the next year and am not sure what I should choose. Ive played through several JCM200's at local music stores and have liked them quite alot but am not willing to spend 1500 dollars on an amp. I play ALOT of Black Sabbath style metal and might consider looking into the Laney GH100Ti. Ive also been considering a used JCM900 from ebay. Theyve been sellin for real cheap lately(around 500-600 dollars). Any Opinions?
-
a 2nd hand Laney Iommi sig amp would be cool, or a boosted JCM800?
The Engl thunder does oldschool metal REALLY well, and can be cranked to give modern tones aswell.
www.rocksolidamps.com <-- decent US dealer + loads of ENGL soundclips
-
^i second the laney or the engl (BTW the thunder is 50 watt)- i haven't tried the thunder, but it might be a bit more "old-school" than most of the other engls...
-
50W, 100W, the difference is only 3db.
-
^yeah, i know, i was just pointing out, since he'd said "100W"
-
thats a cool site but I am looking for a 100 watt instead of 50
-
dude why are you so set on a 100 watt? like ratrod said its really not that much difference in volume- its not twice as loud if thats wot u think...
-
Yeah, it's most certainly not twice as loud.
if you MUST have 100W, look into a powerball, if you can afford it, or those laneys if you can't.
-
I have a new, unmarked Powerball head with the Z5 footswitch that I am selling. Drop me an email at andy@crimesofpassion.org if you are interested. It's a killer tone!!
-
I also like 100w heads over 50w too - there is just more lowend grunt that 50w don't have. You also get more headroom in your clean channel too.
-
but think of the additional costs of valves!

+1

^ :D
i just got a 100w head with a half power switch...
best of both worlds- and its not just pulling 2 valves either- it's triode pentode, so it sounds "creamier" on half power as well...
Man, I love my savage se- i took a chance buying it without having played it first (awesome offer, and i'd played other engls), and, man, did it pay off!
 :D

two EL34s versus four, hmmm... I can stretch to spending another £20 for the sake of my tone

Exactly. I could probably settle for a 50 watter but I already have several solid state amps that are solely for p[rtactice and right now I need an all valve amp that I can use in ANY gigging location. That and its just kinda cool bein able to say "I have a 100 watt all valve Marshall head" :D. Anyways, Has anyone played a Voodoo modded JCM 800 head? Ive been lookin at some of those on Ebay and I got to listen to a couple sound clips.
-
50w heads could be used in ANY gig situation. 100w is only a third (1/3) louder so it may be psycological more than anything.
Personnaly I'll go for a Engl Screamer head, very versatil and powerfull (on a good cab, vintage 30 got 100dB sensitivity, enough to boost up the 50w :) )
Sure you wont have the "I have big balls and you havn't!" factor
JCM900 is just plain cr@p IMHO, as most of the newer Marshall...
If you can find a modded JCM800, just go for it!!!
-
whats cr@p about them? Ive realy never played one and the only real reasonthat I am considerig one anyways is because its the cheapest 100 watt marshall u can find anywhere
-
What's cr@p? You'll see when you get one
-
It all depends on what jcm900 you get really. Anything after the 2100 model is considered cr@p. Mines a 2100 and its ok. Very good for that 80's metal tone, for the modern day stuff an SD-1 would help with more chug and gain. But ENGL Screamers are the nuts in my opinion.
-
I agree with that, some of the 1st series were OK but those'll get their ass kicked by a Screamer
-
i might try and locate some engl's to try localy this weekend. Are they realy more "Bang-for-the-buck" than Marshalls?

depends what you mean by "bang for buck"
They have a MUCH larger range of sounds than a marshall (bar the classic tube, and maybe thunder, because I haven't tried it)- but if you want THE marshall tone, and only that, marshall is the way to go.
