Hi guys!
New member here, glad to join your community.
So this is another one BKP's dilemma.
The guitar is an ESP M II:
-alder body
-maple neck / bolt on construction /
-rosewood fingerboard
-25.5" scale
-OFR made by Schaller
-current PUs are JB / SH-1 '59
I don’t like very much the JB , it would be a good opportunity to try a Bare Knuckle.
After reading a ton of topics and listening so much clips here I've changed my mind so many times.
First it was Holydiver, then Nailbomb, even the Painkiller was the ONE...finally again the Holydiver...
"I am looking to cover a lot of metal genres with this guitar, from Maiden and Priest to Megadeth and Metallica to Lamb of God and Pantera. I know that is a lot of diffrent genres to cover.
The bridge should give me a tight rythm sound for Megadeth, Iced Earth and alike and the leads shouldn't be too trebly as the guitar is bright already and it should give me good harmonics for some Dimebag sqeaulies!'' This is a quote that I like very much.
In addition of this:
- John Petrucci / Ibanez days/
- Vai
- 80's hair metal
- Slayer
- some classic rock
...is that possible........ :(
Thank you in advance and best regards!

Nailbomb bridge. It's very articulate on the top end, but single notes aren't thin. It does those chunky Slayer rhythms too, which is where I feel it edges out the Holy Diver.
-
The HD provides perhaps the better, beefier solotones, but the Nailbomb seems to cover more of the mentioned styles. PK would be too bright imho.

I've been told by Tim (and countless others) that Nailbombs are the way to go for the JP-style tones; perhaps with a Coldsweat neck.
Also, are you trying to troll people by having James LaBrie as your avatar? If so, awesome.

Nailbomb bridge.
C-Bomb or A-Bomb?
PK would be too bright imho.
That's my thoughts too...

Well my favourite band is Dream Theater...in the real life me and Labrie are like twins...that is...
So cheers to everyone. Regards!

A-bomb. The C-bomb is a custom variant of the 'Nailbomb,' which is an AlNiCo pickup, and the one you seek.

Thanks Roo. Isn't the C-Bomb ceramic?

I suppose A- Bomb or...
BTW which is Tim's Email - sales or tech or info@....
-
Yes, I was talking the A-bomb, bec you want to cover classic rock too.
You can reach Tim here or just contact the BKP-team via the BKP-site.

Thanks Telerocker. :drink:
What about the Holydiver? I read here http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=24376.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=24376.0)
a great review. The guitar from the review is neck-thru unlike mine, which is bolt on / more alder, less maple /.
On the Holydiver page there is ''bloody good'' modern metal clip sound.
Thank you!
I really appreciate your posts here...

Personally I like the Holy Diver a bit more then the Nailbomb. Despite the outputcharts it has less oomph then the NB several users stated here, it's beefy in the mids and has a sweeter topend, where the NB is more aggressive, especially in the uppermids and has more (tight) lows. You can roughly say the HD being more 80's metal and the NB more 90's. I think the HD will excell in alder. It will beef up a bolt-on guitar, like the Crawler does in my swampashstrat. The HD provides big fluid solotones. For chordwork is will be a bit politer then the NB. I think the Nailbomb can stretch to all the styles you mention, the HD can nearly do that, maybe it can totally with a good amp. It's just not so trashy as the NB can be. If it was my guitar I choose the HD, but I'm not really a metalplayer. Played some stuff in the past though.
-
HD - more hard rock
NB - more metal
They aren't a world apart. I was just dissatisfied with the low end chunkyness (or lack thereof) on the HD, which led me to sell mine. You might get away with it on a bright superstrat though.

Thank you mates. :)
BTW Tim's recommendation is: Holydiver.
-
Cheers! Hope it works out fine.

Makes sense to me :
I had the NBs and the HDs in a Horizon NT1 maple neckthru swamp ash body.
IMO, Telerocker description's is spot on.
In the end, i kept the HDs in it and it's still one of the more "tonally coherent" (for lack of a better expression) combination i've stumbled upon while fitting BKPs to my guitars... First thing i though was "wow...so THIS is what the seymour JB is supposed to (should..) sound like in a bright guitar..."
It just feels right in this one.
As a reference, i ALWAYS think of Jerry Cantrell each time i hear the HD in an alder/ash guitar...
To sum up (and to quote Alex) : alnico Nailbombs was more aggressive, more metal while Holydivers were more Hard Rock with a stellar solo tone.
-
Thank you for the input 'Ash' J. Williams.
I wonder what do you think of when you hear NBs in an alder/ash guitar?
-
Well, the Nailbomb is kind of an enigma for me : it sure did sound aggressive, tight and incredibly good with this grinding upper mid thing going on in the NT1 BUT it sounded terrible in a Schecter PT telecaster type guitar...
No lows, not so much output... almost 'anemic' if you get what i mean.. yet this guitar sounded quite good with a JB in it...
It seems to be very touchy about the guitar it's in.
I don't think of a sound in particular when i hear the NB, i just know it can cover a lot of grounds (trash/metal), is a bit tighter than the HD, and almost always keep this aggressiveness (is that even a word ? sry i'm french..) to it.
When i was soloing on the bridge unit with the NT1, it had a tad of this almost half c--ked wah sound that i really enjoyed
(great fun playing Marty Friedman solo's with that) but made the riff a little too raw sounding...
However, i did install a calibrated set of Alnico NBs in a friend's Ibanez S and, with the thin mahogany body, it was perfect, far more 'coherent' sounding than in the NT1.
Overall, i think it's the most ceramic-player-friendly alnico pup i've came across (because of the amazing paradoxical balance of cut/tightness and organic feel) although i've never played a Rebell Yell and it seems to also share this feat.

Thanks for your time ... really helps me decide...

I have Nailbombs in a Les Paul, and the Holydiver bridge in a Soloist (maple/alder neckthrough)
The Nailbombs are tight and punchy, but maybe lacking some sparkle in the LP. They kick like a mule, but don't bite. Getting good harmonic feedback is a bit of a chore. Maybe I need to lower them somewhat.
The Holydiver is harmonically rich with nice mids and plenty of top end, but seems to lack bottom end. Doesn't quite deliver a thump to the chest. Harmonic feedback is a breeze.
-
Well guys, I really want THAT PU, that is tight and punchy like the NB and has nice top end and fluid solotones like HD...
You make me wanna...
-
I know how you feel man. I can't decide on a pickup for my new Tokai either...

If i were you, i'd follow Tim's advice and take the HDs.
I did make bad choices when i bought my bkp and it was almost always because of me not following Tim's first advice...
And in case you're not satisfied with them, you have 14 days to exchange them.
But you can be sure that either of those 2 sets are gonna be a great match for this guitar :guitar4:

For the record : I informed Tim about why I find the HD to be lacking, and he confirmed my suspicion something must be off.
So me and my tech are going to do some troubleshooting and get back to Tim with the results.

I just knew, when you mentioned the lack of lows/thumps in your HD, that something was off...
The lows on my HD are just so fat... and this NT1 is quite bright.

... and get back to Tim with the results.
Keep us informed too, please.
