Title: BC Rich Mockingbird fans!
Post by: AngusYoung01 on November 07, 2011, 01:11:47 PM
Hey guys, been away for a little while and now back into lusting after gear. Never good.

Basically I'm after thoughts on Mockingbirds. I really like the look of the Mockingbird Pro X but it's way too difficult to get my hands on one to try. I'm looking for a guitar with a similar feel and playability as my SG but need a Floyd. Would this sit somewhere within that description?

Let me know  :D

What's the playability like in comparison to a Gibbo? The specs seem to match up pretty nicely!

different. My exotic mockingbird has a HUGE chunky neck, maple top and mahogany body. it still does not sound like a les paul

I've got three Mockingbirds,  I really love the shape.  I've never played a Gibson so I can't compare them unfortunately.  My favourite is a through neck with a TOM bridge.  It's pretty heavy, but I really like heavy guitars.  :)

Really huge?  How does it compare with a Gibson '50s shape, for example?

There is a huge variation in neck specs and sizes it would seem as they have been made in a lot of different factories etc and different ranges too.

I would say it is risky buying one you haven't seen if you are after a very specific feel

No, that's fine, wasn't expecting exact specs, I just wanted a rough idea.  I've always assumed they'd probably have the typical skinny-ish "generic Korean guitar" neck shape.

I'm sure you're right.  It will probably fall into that category of guitars I like the look of but will never actually buy.  Like the Yamaha SG.  :)

Not to mention the huge variation in quality between the series...

personally i am not a fan of the newer imports. They are pretty well made for the most part (like any import there is going to be a bad egg from time to time) but I highly recommend holding out for an 80's MIJ NT. They are amazing. NOT only do they look way better with the old school headstock logo, they feel and play amazing. They used top quality Mohagany back then where as now they use Nato. The thing that bother me most about the new imports is that the shapes are not quite right compared to the USA models. To me this really affects the guitars comfort and playability. The quality of the old Japanese NJ series are pretty comparable to the USA models. They were made to the virtually the same specs only with less options (inlays and electronics) They also used Kahlers back in the day (I definitely prefer kahlers to floyds.) If you know how to work on them (which a lot people don't) they are easier to set up and with the full independant saddle movement allow for PERFECT intonations and string height. ALSO The MIJ models are considerably lighter and if you're like me nothing feel better than a nice nice worn in guitar. The New import bodies are considerably thicker. TOO thick, and the bevels are just plain wrong. If your patient you can spot an old NJ for often less than a new import or USA second hand on ebay for little more than a new import. No point on spending 800-900 bucks on an import when you can get a USA for 1000-1500. No brainer to me. I'm not saying the new imports are bad, just not what I would buy for that money. You will get more bang for your buck with an old NJ or a used USA

here is my old Nagoya Japan NT (NJ Series stands for Nagoya Japan, they later moved the production to korea but never changed the name until recently.) Mine is significantly modded

also if you want a mckingbird that feels like and SG, get an old nagoya you wont be disappointed. I love SG's and have always wanted one, but i've never bought one simply because i always seem to find another MIJ BC R that feels and plays better.

early MIJ bolt on bich, very nice player, shapes a bit off, but you can get one of those cheap. anything under 300 is a steal. the Gotoh pickup are not so nice, but the craftsmanship is top notch

This is mine, I'm starting my "Grand Clearout" so I can buy something I actually want, in terms of a BCR. This is the first to go. It's actually my least played guitar... So, Anyways, she's pretty beat. The pickups are those Dragonfire screamers that someone recommended here. They sound pretty good, honestly. The original Gohtohs were shot, so I replaced them. It was the first wiring job I ever did, actually. Everything works 100%, and sounds good.
Y'all can just PM me offers, or trade offers, if that's cool. I don't have a case for it, unfortunately. Sorry, guys. Just holler if you want at it. Thanks...

the Korean Mockingbird I had was pretty nice as it happens, decent size neck (comparable to a modern Gibson, well, my 90s ones anyway).

Whatever it is he used it to cover the last digits of the serial. At the bcr forum we hide the serials due issues of forgeries being made by the guitar troll Ed Roman... Hes notorious for making bcr and prs forgeries

Oh, that guy? I thought it was the Chinese.

But seriously though, that guy just needs to go die a messy death. If even only 10% of the scams he's run over time are true he's scum of the worst sort.

That said, I'm sort of considering that Bich too, Mads!
