Title: **Attn Wireless Users**
Post by: llJasonll on November 08, 2011, 01:42:34 AM
I am deciding to go Wireless, and I need some help!

After years of being afraid to run around the stage, for fear of unplugging myself, I have decided to throw my cables to the curb.

I am a complete noob with wireless systems, as I was always a tone purist.  I am (hopefully) assuming that the technology has come a ways in the past 10-15 years and I can get a system that doesn't hinder my tone for not too much $$$.

I was looking at any of the Line 6 G30-G90 series.  It seems the G50 might be the best bang for my buck, but I am reading that the G90 sounds like using a cable.

Ideas? Suggestions?? Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm using an AKG WMS40 and can't say I have any issue with my tone - best its ever been in fact.

You can pick these up for under £150 new.  I'm sure there are 'better' systems, but this one works just fine.

I agree on the AKG. Good tone, good functionality and the fact it doesn't use 9v batteries makes it more affordable to run.

Oh cool, so those are cheaper than I thought!

Digital Signal is supposed to be better, is there any truth to the claim??

No.

It does thin the tone out a bit, tho. I have the WMS80 and even at something like $700 or whatever it cost, it still noticeably affects the tone. I have since gone back to wired ...

Hmm that sucks.  I suppose I pay a price for freedom of movement on stage...

No wireless sounds the same as a good cable, I have to agree.
But the loss with the AKG is a lot less than the loss I experienced with my Nady. It takes some balancing between the transmitter output and receiver input gain, but it can be made to sound close enough to a cable for me not to care. I wouldn't use it in the studio, obviously, but when you're on a stage big enough to justify using a wireless there's plenty of other factors messing with your tone anyway.

I've used a Sennheiser Freeport for over 5 years and it's been faultless.  Can't recommend it highly enough.  No major tone difference as far as I can hear and I've got pretty good ears...

We have 4 Sennheiser G2 systems in our band and not 1 problem in 4 years of regular use.

The thinning of the tone is an issue if you don't set the gains of the transmitter and receiver correctly - if you max them it does thin the tone, but there is a sweet spot where its not an issue.  I'm picky as hell with my tone and if there was a big impact on the tone, I'd be using a lead again.  As it happens, I actually like my tone better with the wireless, its chunkier if anything - plus there is no risk of getting zapped off dodgy PA's since you're isolated from your amp's ground circuit completely with a wireless.

also in the band mix even if it was (slightly different tone, I say was) would it be noticable. I have never noticed difference and I am funny about my tone

I just got a secondhand Nady wireless system.

I'm actually amazed by how good it still sounds. I can hear the difference in quality between my Spectraflex cable and the wireless but I doubt anyone in the audience would notice.

I haven't tested it in a live stuation though.

Awesome.  Thanks for the replies!

I think I have enough info, along with what was on harmony central, to make a good decision.

Thanks, again!
