Title: RHCP o2 Arena - 10/11/11
Post by: Ian Price on November 11, 2011, 01:21:37 PM
I went along to this last night and to be honest wasn't expecting much due to the dpearture of Frusciante.

I must say that I was more than pleasantly surprised, they sounded great and played loads of old stuff - they even threw in Sir Psycho Sexy.... towards the end.

Josh Klinghoffer is much better than I thought he would be!

Nice one matey - you'll have to let me know if there are any good gigs coming up locally mid-week  ;)

I must admit I've been viewing him with suspicion.... everything about him seems to say "hired hand".

How fast can you say Arik Marshall?

Yes, exactly!  I almost mentioned Marshall before, but Klinghoffer plays "quirky" guitars and wears nerdy/trendy clothes, so I'd guess (judging entirely on appearances) he probably fits in a bit better, even if he doesn't contribute much artistically.  But I don't like the look of him.

I saw them with Arik Marshall (and Dave Navarro) and they are much much better off with the new guy. Obviously he is no replacement for Frusciante. It does help (IMO) that he is friendly with JF and that he has recorded a few albums with him, he was also playing the RHCP correct teles and strats - he even also got a Gretsch out for Californication and Otherside. It was not a White Falcon though, perhaps a Penguin - not too sure really.

Will keep an eye out Dave - not that I get much chance to get out in the week now! That was my first gig/concert in over a year! Off to see The Darkness at the end of November though, looking forward to that. It's on a Friday in London so I suspect that you'll be on your way home back up North then?

Yeah, fair enough Ian, glad you enjoyed the gig.   :)

It's pretty irrelevant what I think of him anyway, since I'm not much of a fan of the band any more - even in Frusciante's latter days I was losing interest.

:D  No worries Philly, other opinions are available of course. The one annoyance for me last night was that his basic tone, particularly with the strat and tele, was too trebly. His solos also didn't but through as well as JFs did when I saw them with him.

I saw them on the 9th at the O2! They were epic! I loved hearing Higher ground and if you have to ask!
Klinghoffer was the right choice. Obviously people loved Frusciante (I do especially) but Josh is a great guitarist and plays on frusciantes solo stuff. He was the perfect person to come in. He has a cool voice as well!

Nice one!

They didn't do If You Have to Ask at the show I was at. The chord sequence just before the solo is great!
