Title: Custom Guitar Ideas?
Post by: Cammi on November 20, 2011, 09:32:50 PM
I'm getting a custom guitar made by Crimson, although I'm on the waiting list :(

I already know the body shape, so it's really now down to Wood Options as well as Neck Constructions.

I'm curious as to hear what wood choices people find interesting, as to what neck construction method compliments them woods. I'm really interested to hear about unusual combos which work as well.

I want the guitar to be really versatile, but focusing more on the metal side of things. I'll be dabbling in some other genres as well though, but not to the extent of gigging with a Jazz band etc. It will always be used to play some sort of metal ranging from Power Metal to Metalcore to Melodic Metal and especially Prog and Technical Metal. I'd also be playing a lot of music played by Virtuosos such as Vai, Petrucci, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc.

I'd really like to hear of your opinions.

Cheers in advance

i'd probably prefer bolt-on for the satch and vai type of stuff. it just seems to be a bit tighter and snappier. the extra tightness won't hurt for metal, either. granted, if you don't have an AANJ, upper fret access would be better with a neck-thru.

Well like I said, it's mainly metal I'll be playing, but I play a lot of the virtuoso stuff at home to kind of build my technique. Other than that, it's metal all the way.

I was even looking at adding Koa into the build somewhere. I've heard nothing but good things about it

I have a custom multiscale baritone. It's a 5-piece maple-bubinga-wenge-bubinga-maple neck-through with bubinga wings, wenge top and ebony fretboard. It's string-through construction with sperzel locking tuners (with a custom-made wide one for my fat lowest string muahah).
Coupled with any of black dog, miracle man and aftermath, it's a fantastic sounding axe. Tonnes of sustain, with lots of  aggressive mids, punchy but controlled lows and a glassy top end. Unplugged it sounds glorious, full and rich. Plugged in clean it's glassy, sparkly on the top without being harsh, and deep in the bass with a nice mid-push. Up the gain and it gets plenty brutal very very fast, with tight, controllable bass, angry midrange and not overly-harsh highs.

Can you tell I like it? :)

This is my axe, it's made by Wez Venables here in the UK and it's called the Vociferator:

You have stuck with that one Roo. Most people on this forum change instruments all the time. Must be a great guitar.

Been talking with my Luthier and we've come across an idea. What do you guys (and girls if there are actually any on here, lol) think?

Poplar Body
Rosewood Neck (Bolt-On)
Ebony Fretboard
Maple or Rosewood Top

Why poplar in particular?

My understanding is that it's a cheaper alternative to alder, similar-sounding, similar weight but not so attractive to look at.

Which isn't to say it's rubbish, it's just a curious choice I think.

I just had a talk with my luthier and he said it would be a great combo. Steve Morse has Poplar bodies on his Music man guitars now, I believe.
