Ok folks, I'm planning a new band (just another covers thing for weekend-warrior fun). It's a trio with the bass player singing, likely to be mostly punky stuff (old punk mostly, though a bit Green Day wouldn't be out of the question).
Over to you guys, song suggestions...

Saturday night. By Whigfield.

On a serious note.. How about some Stooges?

This won't sound like it, but it is a serious suggestion.
Try "The Winner Takes It All" (yep, Abba!).
If you, er, "punk-it-up-some" (is that the correct technical term?), it could be an absolute shocker (in a good way) at a gig. I've tried all sorts of things on it over the last few years. It can go bluesy, rocky, faster, real slow, whatever. I see no reason why it couldn't go punky as well.
And a trio with the bass-player doing vox is probably enough instrumentation to get all the hooks out easily.
Don't blame me if you get famous with a joke Abba cover, though!

all good suggestions lads, will be widening the net as well to include stuff that was 'punky' or had a big influence on that scene, plus post-punk stuff that I see fit to include
Here's a couple I fancy doing in addition to the usual suspects...
Magazine - Shot By Both Sides http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybUqM8jf3mU
Buzzc--ks - What do I get http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EEPvXlTUnU&feature=related
New York Dolls - Looking For A Kiss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64Kz3D2OgAE
-
Stiff Little Fingers - Suspect Device
-
The Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes
Another one which just popped into my head.
-
Kick Out the Jams - MC5
Anything you fancy by Motörhead
What about punking some Psychobilly stuff like The Meteors?
-
MC5s and Motorhead are good suggestions, I do want to spread the net a little wider than just UK punk (that would be too limiting).
-
the entire 'don giovanni' by mozart would be fun to cover
-
80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster - Celebrate Your Mother
Classic tune.
-
You have to stick a few Jam songs in methinks. I would go for Eton Rifles or In The City.
-
aye, gotta have some Wellah in there - agreed.
