Title: Charvel Wild Card #8 Chrome Rod Flame
Post by: HoratioCaine on November 26, 2011, 04:14:26 PM
Was just doing some random browsing and came across what appears to be the new Charvel Wild Card #8 - http://shop.absolute-guitars.co.uk/charvel-wild-card-8---chrome-rod-flame-2445-p.asp (http://shop.absolute-guitars.co.uk/charvel-wild-card-8---chrome-rod-flame-2445-p.asp)

First hot rod flame one for a while.  I am not really a fan of that type of paintjob but the guitar is interesting.  A single pickup EMG with a killswitch, Charvel have gone a little more adventurous.  If I ended up getting one I'd probably end up having it repainted to a solid color.  Too bad I'm broke for spare cash/spending anymore money as usual at the moment!

A guitar with an 85 in the bridge stock? I can respect that.

^ me too

what always annoys me about teh wildcards is that they're always so very nearly "right", but not quite (in this case while i like the flames, i'd like more colours (granted cost may be prohibitive), a passive pickup and a maple neck). And the fact teh next one might be exactly what i want (even though i know it probably won't) is putting me off getting one of the standard pro mods

EDIT: nice find, by the way, thanks for sharing. I normally lurk jcf to see what the next wildcard will be ahead of time, but it hasn't been mentioned there yet, so thanks for the heads-up :drink:

Do you mean because it's an 85 rather than an 81?   Or just that it's an EMG?

(I suppose the 81 is like the EMG equivalent of the Duncan JB, in the sense that it seems to be the default choice of that manufacturer's pickups)

The choice of an 85 rather than an 81 is what I was referring to. I feel that both pickups are equal in the bridge department depending on what you are looking for. It's just nice to see the 85 getting some recognition in that position.

I'm with Dave_mc. Always a small thing that's not perfect. This time, it's the fretboard. With a maple board, I'd probably order one...
I do like Charvels though. I have one of the wildcards and a couple of regular production models. They're excellent value for money.

^ yeah. I think the problem is that, since all the regular production models have the one-piece maple necks, they feel they have to offer rosewood or ebony on the wildcards just so people have some options. But personally I'd prefer maple

I've said it on other forums (maybe i've said it on here too, i forget  ), but personally i'd prefer a few more (pretty basic) options on the regular production models, even if it meant they had to do away with the wildcard concept. The wildcards are so arbitrary (to me, anyway) that they're not really a whole heap of use, and for a marketing plan (i.e. it forces you to buy now as IT'LL BE DISCONTINUED SOON!) it's fairly daft too, as most people i've talked to (online) were of the same opinion as me- rather than twisting your arm into buying the wildcard now rather than later, it was actually discouraging them from buying one of the regular production models in case the next wildcard was exactly what they wanted

I mean, while I can appreciate that having options costs more money, I can't see that having a couple of pickup layout options, the option of a floyd or hardtail, and the option of different fingerboard woods, but having those options all the time (i.e. maybe some rearrangement/retooling of the factory at teh start, but that's it), would cost any more than the wildcard concept where they're basically making a completely different guitar (and presumably having to disrupt their production lines for it) every couple of months.

Could be wrong, of course, i'm no businessperson
