Title: NGD: First 7 String
Post by: Transcend on November 29, 2011, 08:58:37 PM
Well here it is i finally went and did it after over a year of umming and arring about it.

After undoing the "setup" that CJR did according to the tag and intonating it (all the saddles were in a straight line i think CJR was a bit OCD)

Its just as well playing as i expected typical ibanez job but 7 string.

It hasnt taken me as long to get used to playing it as i expected im adapting pretty quick.

The pickups however..... these things couldnt have more flub if they tried

also check out this awesome switchable mod that ibanez kindly installed

it does exactly what the picture shows it goes from ultra shitee to boomy bass no mids and loads of highs ultra shitee mode  :D

Looks good mate!

Any ideas on changing pickups for something that may 'suit' that EQ switch better?

It's awkward because the pickups and circuit run on 3v and not 9v
We took some of these out a while back - although the customer was putting EMGs in instead

yeah its same as my RGA42 was i had to remove the battery holder in order to put a 9v battery in then went passive anyway!

Did you manage to keep the existing battery compartment or did you have to replace it?

Nice quitar on nice sheets!

haha the sheets are the missus' choice she hasn't failed me yet as every set she buys seems to compliment my guitars in some way!

Yeah - the 2x AA was too wide for a normal 9v box - we were putting an 18v system though - but it required some v careful positioning.
A flat 9v box would have worked ok though

Nice.  I thought about getting one of these but I already have a 7 string.  Thinking about getting an RGD 321 though for some drop C fun  :)

I have the rgd320 with an aftermath set. It's my most played guitar easily

Cool.  Good to know then that it seems worth buying one.  I was thinking Aftermath in one.  That might be a good pairing with the insanity of the c-pig in my 7string.  Which I finally found an amp setting that works just as I have blackouts coming  :x

I have the same guitar. Its one of the best guitars i ever owned. the trem is stable, the contour is perfect. the action is good too.

Do you actually want to keep the active EQ thingy?  Maybe you could just replace it with a coil split or something.

Nah the EQ is going! i will figure something to replace it with.

On my other RGA that had the same EQ i changed it for a killswitch.

Splitting options are another good use that i shall look into depending whether i decide to go active or passive with it

Tried the ibanez S-series 7 string the other week, was nice! The 5 position switch did parallel on the neck pickup, lovely for cleans, rather have that than the daft EQ switch ;)

Definitely in my other RGA and my RGD i replaced the 3way witha  5way to get that exact wiring setup as i love the neck parrallel setting

Nice one indeed, but the eq thingy...
I always wanted a guitar with a Buckethead killswitch (arcade button style).

Good idea :p Maybe you should go for a "solo switch" that makes the pickups bypass the volume knob. It's a lovely little trick to get a bit more bite out of the pickups.

Oh, and yeah.. The stock pickups on the RGA series are bar none the worst pickups I have ever tried. Even for Ibanez stockers, they're abnormally shite.

Sorry to chime in a bit late, but I would say: keep both!  :)
