Title: PUPs and noise
Post by: Ochaye on November 30, 2011, 11:58:12 PM
the BKs any noisier you think than the stock gibbos?

see the reason i am asking is when my hands are off the strings the noise levels are quite loud (hum) compared to my stock gibbsons in my other LP...i am aware that levels of noise and hum rise when hands are removed from strings it's just that i did not expect the BKs to be noisier this way compared to the gibbos

to be fair it might just be that the installation was/is not very good ( i don't have the tools to check) ........i had to take it back, twice, due to faulty sloopy solder joints.whaddya think guys, how are your potted MULES compared to whatever you removed for your BKs for noise/hum levels?

I don't have Gibbo's (had some) but my BKP's are silent, at least not noisier then anything else I had.

Might want to check the wiring again.  Sounds like a bad solder joint..  :D

I have no noticeable hum difference with my hands on or off any pups.  (Gibson and BKP included)

Are you comparing lilke with like?  If your Gibbo pickups had covers, and your BKPs don't, that will be the reason they're noisier....

+1. In some Gibsons there is no string ground. To keep noise down all the circuitry is shielded in a metal box, and the pickups are shileded by the metal base plate and the covers. If you take off the covers or replace the original covered pickups with uncovered ones the shielding cage is broken, and you will have more hum than designed.

Cheers Stephan

Possibly bad solder joint(s)?
Ground loop somewhere?
BKPs much closer to the strings than the Gibsons? Could try dropping them away a touch?

Just a few thoughts...
