Never seen this before, they're really ripping it up... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVdPcXW3m_A&list=FL3JIq7MIGB5ErHAzw0qfTLA&index=11&feature=plpp_video
Grohl is like 'f*ck you Taylor, I'm playing drums with these guys' - love it
-
I'd seen this a while back - always worth a repeat viewing! Thanks for reminding me.
LP GAS again!
-
I hadn't seen this.
JPJ is still an incredible bass player & Page is still as sloppy as ever! An absolute genius though!
Thanks for the link!
-
Page is one of those guys that has TONE oozing out of his fingers.
-
That is a fun clip.
-
priceless, when jp enters the stage it's like gandalf the white coming to save the day, (playings still a bit dodgy though)
-
can't believe you guys are slagging off Jimmy Page, I mean REALLY? - yep its loose, but thats his style and its great.
-
Nobody's really slagged him off, just repeated the "Page is sloppy" mantra - which is certainly based on truth. But I'm sure there are thousands of sloppier players who never get called out on it.
JPJ remains my "favourite" Zeppelin member. The guy is awesomely talented, but he's so low-key he just sort of passes under the radar.
I read today that Louise Mensch MP has put Page's name forward for a Knighthood. Wonder if it'll happen?

I like his song writing and production, but I don't get the hero worship that Jimmy Page gets as a guitar player. In isolation I don't think is playing is that great, but within the context of Zep it fits. A bit like Frusciante I guess...

I suppose its a bit like having to explain jokes to people, if I need to explain why Page is so great....

See.... it's a "don't get" scenario!
Like that thread which sparked so much unexpected semantic discussion!

It''s just called a different opinion, Ian ;)

It's a bit like someone trying to explain to me why Al Di Meola is so great. I don't think he is although others do. Just a different opinion :)
-
To me Jimmy Page falls into another category than many players, it's not just his playing thats hugely influential - its the songwriting, tone, image - the whole package.
I'm not bothered if someone disagrees, I'll still sleep tonight - disagree away, ha ha
-
I think that's the difference. I respect him as a musician more much more than as a guitar player, if that makes sense? He's multi-faceted.
I prefer my guitar heros straight ahead - Slash, SRV etc

I agree with that first statement - Page is definitely an all-rounder. All the members of Zeppelin seemed to be more than just "the guitarist", "the bassist" etc.... And it was all down to them, very little to do with outside influences like producers or record companies. There's a massive "depth" to the music. I don't actually like all of it, but in a way that makes it better.
The only other band I see in the same way is, maybe, Pink Floyd.
(But funnily enough, I've never seen the appeal of Slash..... but let's not start another debate! )

Would Led Zep have been a better band with a less sloppy guitarist ? Leaving aside JP's contribution to the songwriting.

I'm imagining a nightmare scenario of them bringing in someone like Chris Broderick....
As a much less significant example, anyone remember Love/Hate? Their guitarist Jon E Love wasn't anything special, but they were a magnificent ragged mess of a band, at least for two albums. Then they brought in some technical whiz called Darren Housholder.... and the next album was rubbish.

yep, I was a fan of theirs at the time - still got my signed vinyl too :D
they're doing a UK tour in Feb 2012 with Gilby Clarke, I'll be going.

Ahh Love/Hate. They headlined the Marquee's New Years Eve gig in 91 or 92 - it's one of those years but my memory has gone. My mates band were second on the bill, but took the wise decision to go on earlier than some of the other bands so we could get on with the drinking and partying, so we were utterly $%ed before Love/Hate came on just before midnight so I can remember nothing about their set. Their drummer was a cool bloke and took some time to talk to the support bands and crews, however the guitarist was a complete dick. He taped off his rack and we weren't even allowed to look at it. Spinal Tap springs to mind.
Happy days, just wished I remembered them... :S
