Title: New guitar, new pickups
Post by: kellar on December 02, 2011, 07:53:18 PM
So I just picked up another ESP LTD EC-1000T. Love this guitar and it was cheap so I grabbed it. I suspect that I will be wanting to upgrade the pickups being that they are fitted with Seymour Duncan Alnico II Pro's and was curious what others are using in this guitar. I mostly play blues and rock. It will be played through a Tech 21 Trademark 30.

Did you already play it? Maybe you'll like the SD's. They sure nice for blues and rock.
Otherwise I would throw Mules in.

I have not tried them. The last one I had was fitted with a JB and SH 59. I did not like the muddy quality of the neck and ultra bright bite of the JB so I swapped them out for a Stormy Monday and Riff Raff which turned out to be a brilliant combination. I have had the Mules in my Epi LP and they are great. Wanting to try something a little different this time around. Very curious about the Black Dogs.

I think most of the vintage and vintage hot range could do it for you. I would have suggested mules as Telerocker, but seeing you already have a pair and want something else I'm not sure what to suggest. If you want something in the ballpark of the mule you could try an Abraxas as it's often described as a mule with more oomph to it. Ypu'll probably end up happy no matter what BKP you pick.

Does that model have a maple top, or is it all mahogany?

If it's the latter, you might be better off steering clear of middy, bassier models like the Crawlers, HDs or Black Dogs.

Mahogany body, flamed maple top.
Mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard.

My experience with these is that they are lighter and thus a bit more "airey" than the other LP models. The Seymour Duncan JB was very shrill in the bridge position.

Who knows, the alnico II pro's may be great in it. I tend to get ahead of myself with new gear though and automatically want to throw a pair of BKP's in there! :D

In that case, I think the world's your oyster, pretty much any humbucker seems to work in a maple top LP.  Depending on personal taste, of course.  :)
