Hey guys,
I'm getting an all mahogany Les Paul type baryton guitar in the near future and I need some advice.
The guitar is a Michael Kelly Patriot LowBoy :

After listening to samples and reading the forum I came with the following couple : a MQ in the neck position for a Sabbath P90-ish sound and a nice clean. And a Warpig in the bridge as a calibrated set with the Warpig look.
I'll play mainly Old Doom/DeathMetal stuffs with this as well as some heavily downtuned extreme jazz kind of music (Like Ephel Duath if you know that band). It'll be tuned to G I think, with a possible drop to F to play Meshuggah style noise nonsens
What do you think about the MQ/Warpig combo for such a low low tuning?
I'm pretty sure about the MQ but not so sure about the Warpig...
-
The warpig is a wise choice, sir!
-
Will the MQ sound good with that low tuning? I need good clean :)
-
Dunno, never played that.
Better wait for another regular or Tim or Steve to chip in....
-
cant help with the pickups as i havent got any BKP's (yet).
but... i looked at that baritone a while ago (just on the interenet) and they look reaaaally nice.... could you fill me in on what its like when you get it as im desperate for a good baritone...
-
I've searched for months before finding this one, every other cheap barytons were looking bad and/or were built with shitey woods (basswood and poplar/agathis cr@p are banned here  )
It looks good (i'll get the black one), seems to sound good as I've eard, so I think it's the way to go :)

Warpig and MQ is a great combo. I can't see why a MQ wouldn't work with a baritone. Fender makes baritones with single coils and Tony Iommi had no problem tuning down to C# with P90's.
-
I know about Tony Iommi's P90 sound, in fact that's why I want a MQ
Just for that very fat lowtuned sound  I'm a big fan :) (even if those albums are older than me lol)
-
I'm actually going with a Pig-90 and P-91 combination for an Iommi SG Baritone so I am sure that you will have no problems. I have a Warpig/MQ combo on an Explorer and they sound great together.
-
Thx, I think I'll be going for the MQ/Warpig calibrated set. But I need to get the guitar first

BTW, your sloganizer rules. PDT_002

Haha, I put that thing on every forums with the correct subject

The VHII's are VERY clean sounding, and sounds great when You crank the amp.
These have a very clear bottom-end as well, and sounds killer for down-tuned stuff.
You "might" wish for more output for extreme metal, but I'm very pleased with the tone as it is.
They can do AC/DC, ZZ-Top, old VH. Into a good high gain amp, even metal. No problems at all.
I can imagine these as a great pair in a barritone guitar due to the clean and clear tone the VHII's produce. That means no mud whatsoever.
And IMO they LOVE to be pushed hard, it's like they really opens up at higher volumes.
Good luck.

Just read it was possible to get a ceramic Warpig, won't that be better for ultra low-tuning? As I understand they sound a bir sharper.
I was decided, not anymore

Look for some clips made by Drac. He uses Warpigs in baritones and death tuned guitars. I can't quite remember wich magnets he has.
-
Gotta check that, thx

That really is evil. I think the warpig has to be the best metal pickup on the market.
My brother has a ceramic Warpig in his 7 string, that sounds awesome for playing gindcore/black and death metal. I'll get him to post up a clip in a couple of weeks. PDT_045
HHAAAA!! I want to hear that
Already got some alnico warpig sample thx to Drac, I need some of the ceramic one for comparison
