Title: Super low output neck pickup to go with bridge Painkiller?
Post by: eskilrask on December 05, 2011, 04:15:50 PM
So I'm looking to pick up a used Painkiller for my Jaden Rose Series 2 (super-thin mahogany superstrat with a AANJ bolt-on maple neck and a hardtail bridge). I play metal, and I know what the Painkiller is going to sound like, thick and focused with a tight bass response and fairly harsh highs - like a tighter version of my Aftermath.

Now since it's camo covered I'm gonna want a bare knuckle neck pickup to go with it, and here's where I need help. Because I don't really use the neck position a lot except for cleans, but that's not really a territory I ever enter since my amp is a Peavey 5150 II (so cleans are shite, obviously).

As a result, I would like a really low output pickup with a fat sound that would be great for cleans and maybe a bit of fusion-y lead tones and such. I like my cleans pretty thick and bright but not too nasal sounding. I can always jump on my tubescreamer for extra grit, so the pickup should just be super low-output so I have something to go from.

I've been looking at the Mule, but how would that go with the Painkiller in the bridge. I don't want to be completely unable to play leads on the neck pickup so volume difference can't be that great!

Thanks!
Eskil

i would say a mule or a stormy monday will do just fine.
volume differences could be levelled out to a certain degree with some height adjustment.

holy diver neck has similar middy EQ to match the painkiller and it's cleans are gorgeous, splits well too

And only to a certain degree. Which is why I would advise against pairing a super high output pickup with a low output one. There is a reason why BKP come in calibrated sets. If you factor in that they are very height-sensitive you don't want to have the problem I had when I tried to match the Miracle Man with a lower output neck pickup.
