Title: An update on my guitars - down to 6, an NGD and only PRSs and Fenders...
Post by: Twinfan on December 12, 2011, 10:10:49 PM
OK.  Deep breath.  Here goes  :o

An early Christmas present to myself arrived a couple of weeks ago, after a complete nightmare with couriers, so I'm overdue this NGD post.  I had a little pang of GAS to get a different version of the best guitar I've ever played, and Mrs Twinfan fell in love with one the instant I showed her a pic and insisted I find a way to buy it.  Who was I to argue?

To try and re-coup some cash I've sold my Paul Richardson SGR and my PRS DGT, plus my JTM45/100 half stack is likely to be going up for sale in the New Year too.  I'm still gob-smacked that I could rustle up the cash, and very grateful for a) the fortunate position I'm in right now and b) John at Peach Guitars for offering me a deal I couldn't refuse.

Anyhow, and without further ado, here's the new line-up.  Sorry Tim, no BKPs ()

First, the PRS guitars:

PRS Modern Eagle with solid Brazilian Rosewood neck
(a superb guitar, and my 'comfy trainers' - I love how this guitar feels)

PRS Private Stock Signature Limited #37 in 'Rainforest'
(my new absolute #1, an absolute knock-out in every way)

PRS Private Stock Signature Limited #41 in 'Aquamarine Burst'
(the NGD, and my new gigging guitar, even though I don't normally like quilts or trems!)

And here are the Fenders:

Fender Custom Shop '50s Top Bound Esquire
(bought from Ian Price here on the forum and now sporting 50s pinup decals front and rear)

Fender Custom Shop '58 Telecaster
(Mrs Twinfan's favourite - "Ruby Tuesday")

Finally my very first electric:

Fender Squier '62 JV Strat from 1983
(fitted with David White Old Glories pickups and a Callaham trem block as the original stripped)

Oooooh ....... What a surprise

I know I will be in the minority, but I much prefer the colour of #41

One or two folks do, in the flesh #41 is quite dark except when the light hits it and you get the WHAM effect  ;)

Nice addition to an already very tasty stable. How much different does the new prvate stock sound? Compared with the hardtail version one.

Hope they all prove to be real keepers.

have fun :D

Wow, a collection that makes me totally jealous. The Rainforest PS is just stunning and I'm not really into quilt and stripe-extravaganza, unless it's a masterpiece like this one. Very nice color and depth.

"Down to 6"?  Weren't you down to 5 at one point?

(Pot.  Kettle.     )

Love the new addition, I think the colours of the two PS guitars match the tops perfectly.

Still get most GAS for that Tele though....

I was!  I was waiting for #37 to arrive and had 5.  I would have 5 again if I could part with the Esquire, but I can't.

Nice addition to an already very tasty stable. How much different does the new prvate stock sound? Compared with the hardtail version one.

They're very similar sounding, as you would expect and hope I guess, but there is a difference between them.  What I’m finding is that:

The Rainforest (with a stoptail) is a little thinner and brighter sounding.  Notes have a bit more snap and percussiveness to them, especially on the high end, and it’s noticeable with gain as well as with cleaner amp settings.

The Aquamarine Burst (with a trem) is a little warmer and thicker sounding with a slightly mellower tone overall, probably related to the floating bridge setup and vibration of the trem springs.

Overall, I guess the difference is a subtler version of the contrast between a maple ‘board Tele (Rainforest) and a rosewood ‘board Strat (Aquamarine Burst).  Both in the same ballpark of overall tone, but different to the trained ear.

Also, the weight and sustain of both guitars is pretty much identical from what I can tell.  The trem model has a flatter feel with a bit less of a neck angle, but it’s a subtle difference and having had the DGT for a little bit it’s the same as that.  Not a massive difference from a stoptail McCarty/Modern Eagle or the Rainforest Sig Ltd though to be honest, and only really noticeable when you play different guitars back to back.

Hope they all prove to be real keepers.

Apart from the two Private Stocks, I've had the others a little while now so the group is pretty constant.  I can't see me buying anything other than PRSs in the future, so it's all down to what Paul can come up wioth next and if I like it not!

That's very interesting!  I would generally think of trem guitars as brighter and snappier, but then most trem guitars have ash/alder/basswood bodies and bolt-on maple necks.  I guess it's a different story with mahogany and a set neck.  And I suppose it does make sense that the floating bridge would soften the attack a little.

It's giving me a hint of GAS for a PRS with a trem now...

I wasn't a trem fan at all up to now, but the PRS trem is excellent.  Very good indeed for such a simple unit.

No chance mate!   I'm dead happy with this lot, really great guitars.  The only itch I've still got to scratch is a PRS Custom 24 with a sweet switch....

Very nice collection !!
I particularly like the Esquire and the Tele.

   Fender Custom Shop '58 Telecaster
(Mrs Twinfan's favourite - "Ruby Tuesday")

Does Mrs Twinfan play "Ruby T" (or any of the others for that matter) ?

Mrs Twinfan will occasionally attempt "House Of The Rising Sun" on one of them.

Attempt being the key word here.....

A beautiful, select, collection. I think I prefer the colour of the green PS PRS but the patterning of the wood on the blue one is lovely. Still think I prefer the DGT you just sold to either of them though :). Both Fenders are gorgeous too.

I'm normally quite reserved but 'Kin'ell Dave! Wow, awesome addition and collection. However, you really don't need the cr@ppy worn out faded blue ME (I mean the colour has washed out already) and should send it to me immediately (it's still my favorite). Congrats and happy Christmas to you.

ME!
I literally have the cash waiting in a savings account.
I'm also waiting for Brad to finish with Angelina so I can rag her senseless, I know there's going to be a big queue, but I'll make sure I'm at the front with my best suit on and some breath mints / rohypnol
