Title: NSHPD
Post by: Dr.Pain on December 21, 2011, 02:15:35 AM
Boss Heavy Metal HM-2.  Made in Japan, June 1985.  My limit for it was $100 on ebay and I got it for $100.05.  Sounds a  million times better than the Behringer HM-300 copy I got this year.  Run it through my 30 watt Marshall overdrive channel and got the lovely thick chainsaw tone  :)

I got two, both a japanese and a taiwanese :P I actually tend to like the Taiwanese version a little better.

Djent is still for pussies!
The hm-2 is the tool of the trade to get the "Stockholm" Sound.
Example:

This Paticular sound has been become very, very popular again, thanks to Kurt Ballou from Converge, and some old school Death Metal freaks.

You wont :P They have a pretty high value. The japanese usually goes for around 200$ on ebay

They have a tone nothing else can produce. Back when I first started in to play in 1991 they were not too highly thought of and were only really used for the Stockholm sound in Swedish death metal.  Metal Zone came out and they were the go as they were used for the Gothenburg sound and American death metal.  Run the pedals through small solid state amps and you get the tone they used in the studio at the time.

The HM-2 and MT-2 were responsible for so much great music.  :)

I can't get good sound from the pedals through my Vypyr 60 amp but them again it really doesn't need them.  Has to be some modelling that works with them though.

More HM-2 goodness :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ia4EH5xIBe0

Wow, I used to have one of these pedals years ago.  It was my first proper pedal (having only had a cheap plastic distortion pedal before that).  I think I sold it for £20... kind of wish I'd hung on to it now they're in demand.  I remember it has a hell of a lot of low end on offer & the drive sounded pretty good once you dialled it back a little to get rid of that fizzy top end.

the way we use it is everything dimed out except the gain, which you leave on 1

I had that one. Served me for a while, but always founded a little thin with strats and tele. Nice buy though.

The other thing to do is everything on 10 in the overdrive channel of a small solid state amp and control the channel volume.  They set up the recording mic's at the back of the amps too at Sunlight Studios to thicken the sound.

Those are cool pedals.

Kinda makes a guitar sound like Lemmy.

I bought mine Xmas 1984 along with a boss CS2 compressor sustainer from Rockbottom Music (the one that got looted in the riots earlier this year).
All got sold years ago, think I bought & subsequently sold another years later

It was fun at the time - funny that they have made a comeback

sounds killer for that style of music - I reckon there is scope for an even more badass version by adding a midrange control too.

Nice find.  I need to mess with my modelling amp to make my HM-2 work.  I've found that the amp only needs it's tube screamer from time to time and anything else goes to shite real quick.  6505 and Dual Rec did sound the most promising but didn't have much time to fine tune so better get to it.

I was wrong about 6505 and Dual Rec.  My amp has a krankenstein model in it.  A default setting called Krank - It.  Combined with the HM-2 and my Warbeast 1, it all chainsawed nicely  :D

I like your style, grind!!!!

Having played with the HM-2 a bit, I think it might sound best feeding a slightly dirty amp rather than a clean tone.  Anyone? (with experience in getting the best from the HM-2).

The usual "oldest trick in the book" is usually to have all controls dimed, and the actual distortion on 1, fed into an amp on the dirty channel. Works like a charm, pretty much everytime!

I used my metal zone to drive the sound with the HM-2 before it.  It sounded very nice  :D
