Title: Another pickup question and also a tightness question?
Post by: em07189 on December 27, 2011, 09:08:36 PM
My gear :

ibanez rg 2550, basswood body ...

i want a bridge pickup.

ok after alot of research i still have one question, maybe the last before i order a BKP  :)

When you guys say that the aftermath is tight or super tight , is the pickup more tight than a emg 81?

I see that people write good things about the holydiver, it's a good lead pickup ...

I'm considering the following pickups rigt now:

-Aftermath, holydiver, sweat cold, miracle man.

of which i want to ask the following questions:

- wich one is more agressive?
- wich one has the best note attack?
- wich one has more note definition?
- wich one has more output besides the miracleman?
- wich one can nail petrucci rhythm tone, like the dream theater lastest 3 albums?

Once again thanks.

in my experience, I'd say yes, but some will disagree

I'd say the aftermath is the most aggressive
if by 'best', you mean the strongest picking attack, that's the aftermath again
note definition is relative... holy diver and cold sweat are clearer on distorted chords and cleans
aftermath also feels at least as high output as the miracle man
none will sound exactly like petrucci... from these particular alternatives, I'd pick the miracle man, but the others could work too (maybe the cold sweat wouldn't get too close)

From your discribed questions and tonal desire I would say you are between the Miracle Man and Aftermath. I agree the Aftermath sounds as tight as an EMG, has a dry and compressed sound, but still retains a lot of note character absent in the EMG 81. The Miracle Man is similar in character, more low mid based than the Aftermath, and depending on the guitar carries a lot of low end but still pretty tight. It has a huge sound.

The Cold Sweat is very clear, precise sounding pickup and works extremely well in low tunings. You might not like how bright it will be in that basswood guitar, though. I personally love the Ceramic Nailbomb, and it does a nice job with different amps at mimicing a Petrucci tone, and can also (with the right amp) sound similar to Steve Vai, which is what I was going for with that pickup. If you want the Petrucci neck tone the Cold Sweat neck is the way to go, hands down.

Check out some of the sound clips. I'm not sure which BKP will have a sound similar to the Crunch Lab, or in the ballpark.

I'd go with an Aftermath, sounds like it might actually be the one for you.

It depends on how tight you play. The pickup wont make you tighter, it will just make it harder for you to hide your mistakes.

Get the aftermath..
