Title: String Gauges; needing recommendations for different tuning
Post by: DoomBuggi on January 06, 2012, 12:32:20 AM
Grettings,

I am will be using a guitar tuned to C-Sharp standard soon (with a PK in the Bridge), and I am trying to figure out what gauge is going to be similar tension to the gauges I have experience with.  The reason I am asking, is for the E-flat tuning I am using, no stores in my city carry the gauges I use, so I have to order online when I need a bulk shipment.  I would appreciate recommendations that will help me get the relative tension that I like.  Thanks!

All of my guitar's scales are 24.75 inches or 62.87 cm

Sting gauges and tensions I use currently;

E standard
Ernie Ball Heavy Bottom/Slinky top
.010, .013, .017, .030, .042, .052

E-Flat Standard & Drop C-Sharp
D'Addario EXL 117
.o11, .014, .019, .032, .044, .056

So what would be good for C-Sharp Standard?

Also, I have often wondered what the optimum tension is scientifically speaking.  Some one has had to have done science on it.  I know some prefer thicker or thinner gauges, and rounder or brighter tones, but I like it to be just right.  Not to slinky, not to tight.  Not to dark, not to bright.

Thanks. -J

^ that's going to be personal. my fave is 9s in E with 25.5" scale length. tons of players hate that slinky feel :lol:

assuming you like your current tension, i'm guessing 13s for C# standard.
