Well I have a baby due in 7 more weeks and have been tearing the house apart trying to get ready. i have been told that i cant really get away with having loads of guitars on stands and leaning up against bits of furniture any more
so, time to start hanging them up. Generally i dont like wall hangers that hold by the neck only, but i could not afford to spend a few hundred getting enough cradle types and didnt want to use the strap button types as they only ever fit one guitar shape, and that would not suit my needs
anyway, 7 have made it onto the wall in my dining room - here is the test fit

i figure i can get away with an amp or two underneath and maybe 3 or 4 more on (stable) stands in front. might fir a uke hanger under the bass as well - but i am pretty happy with this so far
-
Giant congrats on the baby!
The wall hangers never have been a favourite of mine, but if I had to use them I would probably go with the ones they use at my local store http://www.thomann.de/de/hercules_stands_gsp39wb_guitar_wallmount.htm (http://www.thomann.de/de/hercules_stands_gsp39wb_guitar_wallmount.htm)
At least they sooth my paranoya.
If I ever had enough space to get everyone on one wall I think I would very much like it. It can look very awesome.
Meanwhile IŽd like to steal that iceman thing from you....
-
Love how you got the guitars on the wall though I do wonder if the two lowest one might be a bit too low when you get your child starts to stand up! Nice looking guitars you got there too.
-
I am considering that... i think an amp barrier may be the temporary solution, maybe some kind of guard if needed.
but as far as i am concerned, as soon as she can reach them, she can play them ;)

Exactly what I was about to mention :mgreen:
From experience, those pesky little critters grow up quite fast and the start messing with just about anything within reach - and you'd be surprised to find out what they manage to reach one way or another.
Nice looking guitars you got there too.
Indeed. And congratz, hope you'll enjoy your new baby too - since there's no 30 days return policy :p
-
Looks good!
I wish I could clear some space for myself that way, but the only free wall space I have is directly above radiators, so I don't want to be hanging guitars (or CDs/DVDs, for that matter) in the heat!

What's the LP one

What's the LP one
Its a john birch one i have been slowly 'restoring'
you can see how it started here, i was going to re do the burst - but the splits in the body were a bit discoloured so it went black instead
http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/John%20birch%20singlecut/
Left to right
*mid 50's framus(??) archtop - i have replaced the fretboard, added a truss rod and reset the neck. Also added a kent armstrong pickup and end pin jack socket. I am just need to stick its pickguard on when i get around to it
*danelectro DC59, currently set up for slide and tuned DADGAD
*WV Iceman, its actually a much older neck from one of my early guitars - didint like the rest of the guitar but wanted to keep the neck. Has a set of emeralds which i didnt like in any other guitar, but really suit this.
*WV Verdigris bass - kind if a melding of a P-bass(woods and electronics) and teisco spectrum bass (shape). Its a BKP P-bass pickup with a series parallel switch for a little extra versatility
* john birch LP
*WV stratele - korina body under the distressed metal finish. has one of the old versions of the BKP flat 50 and a bulldog tele neck pickup.
*1937 Regal resonator. also tuned DADGAD. its a very cheap model from its time, rare because of the wooden cover (only seen two more wooden covered ones). sounds great though
These are the guitars i am currently playing the most

I think a wall with loads of necks and spare parts hung on it would look really rather quite good. If you did it properly you could have an arty exploded view of a guitar.
:D

I've got two kids - nothing that they like better than swinging on a guitar!
-
the way i see it is the worst case scenario is i have to buy one of these

It will still take up less space than the piano that was against this wall a few weeks ago ;)
-
That thing could protect the amp...though it will eventually double as a ladder to reach the guitars. And once she finds something like a stick the speakers of the cab under there are history too.
Just burn all you musical stuff now, I think that way it will be less painfull ;)
-
Congrats on the forthcomming baby! :D
There's nothing like a guitar wall and just like MrBump's kids my daughter likes to "play" guitar as well. I'm sure your daughter is spped picking before you know it :D

at least i am quite well set up to repair anything she does break :)
-
A wall of amps below might prove a convenient way of climbing higher to reach the guitars. Mine loved climbing and keeping things out of their reach was a constant preoccupation and one which failed on many occasions. Shackles around the ankles work well though.

To keep the kids in? good Idea!

Congratulations on the baby!
No matter what I did my son always seemed to find a way to reach the things we tried to put out of his way. I let him strum on my guitars after about six months though and he soon learned that he had to be gentle with them. Touch wood we have had no mishaps so far. He is now inseperable from his own little Simpsons ukelele
-
guitars look great, good luck with the immanent birth, oh and is the wall relic'd
-
I want that john birch one is very nice
-
oh and is the wall relic'd
just spent saturday stripping it (3 layers of anaglypta!!!) , filling all the holes and getting it ready for paint. I was actually relieved to see fairly decent plaster underneath as the rest of the house has been a nightmare! odd that the one room with decent walls had so much cr@p stuck over them.
so i spent part of today making sure i had the guitars positioned as i wanted them before we put the new paint on. doing it at this stage meant i could draw on the wall with templates and play with positioning. now they are removed until after paint is dry.
i may also add some pads behind the bodies just in case, just got to decide what will work best

congrats on the baby...... and padding is a good idea..
i was also thinking of adding a little wire that is screwed into the wall right by the bottom strap button...in a fashion that once hung...i could wrap it around the button to avoid an accidental pull off from any child.
-
Keep the baby in a cage. Sorted!
-
Congrats on the daughter, Wez!
With kids around I can see the appeal on have sobber looking guitars instead of high figured exquisite woods... I can be ok with a ding on a black guitar, not sure on some fantastic burl or something
-
Congrats on the baby & the guitars 8)! A guitar wall...nice! :)
-
Good luck with the baby :D
Beware of that fireguard cage. Admittedly I had twin boys, so the buggers encouraged each other, but children do like "posting" things. We had one of those cages, and it would fill up every couple of hours with anything that could move - toys, cushions, plants, any cr@p they could lay their hands on.
Btw, what make are those hangers, Wez?
-
just these stagg ones
http://www.djmmusic.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=GUH-WN-REC
i actually got one to test first before ordering them all. they do what they say on the tin, although it would be impossible to mount them the way shown in the pic. the main downside is that they are not very adjustable once installed. plenty strong enough though

Aren't there problems with certain hangers/stands eating into nitro finishes?
(Seems like monumentally bad design, seeing as they're meant to hold guitars...)

That was my very next question!!
I guessed they might be the Stagg ones, Wez. I've also been looking at the Hercules ones that "close up" as you apply a guitar - I have this contraption on a Hercules stand for my Explorer (basically the stand "hangs" a guitar), and I already know that the material that Hercules use is nitro-friendly... But a full set of Hercules wall-hangers (for my needs) is going to work out a mite expensive!!

that was my main concern ;)
just trying out the holders for now but if they do start to eat nitro i will report back. looks ok so far and i generally find the safest solution is to rewrap the offending parts if needs be
-
I was going to ask if that was where the piano used to be. I imagine you are running around finishing lots of things in the house at the moment and counting down the days! I take it all the tools and lose things are in the shed now and you'll be working out there more than before?
-
unfortunately so, but the shed is quite well insulated and it seems to be working ok so far... but the assembly of most guitars will probably still happen on the dining room table, and we have cleared out some of the cupboard space in the house. so all my wiring and set-up set up stuff can be kept indoors as well as any nearly complete guitars. i do have to be more aware of the space i have available than before..
I actually forgot how big my spare bedroom was till i had moved two workbenches and years of offcuts out of it ;)
it will have to do till i can afford to move house
-
the guitar wall is very rock'n'roll wez! you've got some rare instruments on there too. very cool.
-
Congrats on the new baby! I am expecting our second any day now. My 2 year old now though doesnt really play around my guitars that are easily accessible on the floor, just the odd time she runs up and hits a string and gives a mischievous smile! Never really had a problem overall, but every child is different i suppose.
