I'm getting an awful lot of this on here recently:
Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.
Is it just me or are you getting the same?
-
Occasionally, yeah.
-
Yep, get it every so often..
-
Yep - happens to me. 3 or 4 times a week I would say.
-
It's happened on and off many times over the years. I've had it a couple of times in the last few days, but usually everything's OK just a few seconds later.
-
yup same here
-
Yes the same. About 1/2 times a week. :?
-
I think it happens every time they turn it off and on again

I suspect the message you're seeing is related to the forum using up all the available database connections. You should probably contact your hosting providers asking them to look into the forum and database logs to see if they can identify the underlying issue. Depending on your configuration it may be as simple as increasing the max database connections the database server can use. Or it may be a deeper issue, thats their job to do as that's what you pay 'em for! ;)

I get it a lot too - don't know if it is my ISP or BKPs
I also get "session timed out" a lot if I'm posting a post - might be just my computer since I upgraded operating system
-
It isn't your ISP Feline - SMF is a part of the operating system on the server that is used to get handles on the database, and whenever SMF cannot get an available handle it reports this error, it could be due to the connection limit like Shobet says, or it could be resource issues on the machine itself - impossible to tell from our side.
The "session timed out" error is different - that is reported by the web server. I've never had that one on this site myself, but it is usually because you've taken too long to post your message, although that is just a guess - it's hard to tell without seeing the logs or knowing how the application containers are set up on the web server.
-
Agree with the above from Chris and Shobet.
I also get the time out message when posting from time to time - quite often when I have typed a response in seconds. A little confusing but not much of a hassle.

Just been getting it a lot lately. May be my ipad
-
No it's server side, unless you're running the forum from your iPad!

Surely an iPad could cope with a few days worth of the BKP forum!

It's definitely a web server/database issue and there's nothing we can do about it as humble web browsing mortals. The forum script (SMF) is saying it can't make a connection to the database, nothing to do with the end user's web browser.
The SMF help page at http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Repair_settings.php says the forum software can be set to use standard or persistent connections, I would guess that it's set to persistent at the moment and there are too many lingering unclosed database connections or mySQL doesn't have enough available connections.
