Title: Just ordered another set of Holy Divers.
Post by: Trendkiller on February 01, 2006, 02:43:09 PM
Hi.
Just wanna share...IMO these pickups are just great.
I had to get another pair to go into my main guitar now, a 1970 LPC.
My Jackson KingV "Korina" with HD's sounds just BIG and bad, fat tone, great harmonics, clear, smooth sustain....
Killer for rock and metal.
These are my fave BKP's so far.
Btw, I also have a pair of VHII's and the MM in two other LP's, these are also are real good.
I guess I'll have these HD's next week, some nice things wating for.

You should try Nailbombs, I really like em.

I received my new HD set and must say that they rock!
The NB is more of an extreme take-no-prisoner side. More gain. The HD bridge is very versatile, very good for classic to modern rock and hard rock. Maybe a bit smoother than the NB.

I take it the LPC is a Les Paul Custom or Classic? When you get em installed, can you let me or the forum know how it sounds in that? I'm thinkin (yet again ) about replacing the Mules with something with a bit more power, and the new HD sounds like that kinda pickup. Is the new one an Alnico V magnet or still ceramic? Its either these or VHII for a vintage hot!

They're Alnico V and like CED said, they rock 8)

Yes Alnico V. They push a lot more than The Mule! More mids than the Mule too.
The VHII has less mids and fatness, and sparklier and brighter treble to my ears.
If VHII are vintage hot, HD are vintage hot hot!

Hmm I didnt try the HD's at Music Live, only VHII's, Abraxas and Warpigs.. I think the HD could well be too much output for me but I dunno if I will find that much of a difference between VHII's and Mules, in terms of output and "push".. I guess I also want it easier to get harmonics out, Mules make me work too hard :P I shoulda tried more out head to head!

I played Mule and VHII.
VHII make harmonics jump easily from the board. VHII cut through in heavy distortion with beauty. More power than Mule, you can hear it.
But The Mule has gorgeous mids (better than the VH mids). I really like both pickups though.

The only set of the new Holydivers at Music Live were in a box!  Tim hadn't finished the spec on them, he was still debating over 2 different winds.  I got the set in the box, though I have reviewed them as Rebel Yells.  I also have the alternate wind coming.  All I can tell you is that they are the pickups I turn to most for classic rock.  I agree with everything Trendkiller says about them.

Oh right   Do you think a new HD would work well in the bridge with a neck Mule, in an LP? I LOVE the Mules tone but sometimes I find myself wanting more edge in the bridge position..Its a choice between HD, maybe RY, VHII and Black Dogs, I still wanna keep the nice LP tone.

If you order the new HD, I think you will love the tone if you like lots of harmonic feedback.  If not, the Black Dog would be my next choice, but then you are going for the Jimmy Page tone.

Hmm yeah I just want a general LP tone still, thats why I was worried about VHIIs in an LP as it might take away some of the LP goodness! Sounded great in the PRS though.. I thought I'd like Abraxas as its just a hotter Mule (or so I heard somewhere I think) but it seemed too thick for my liking.. So do HD's still retain the classic LP tone, or would they be too high output for stuff like Led Zeppelin, GnR, ACDC etc? Sorry for thread hijacking but it is on topic with the rest of the thread and maybe someone else could benefit from my questions

Remember, I basically want my Mule but with a bit more grit/output and edge to it in the bridge position  :D

HDs have really more output than Mules. More turned towards the hard-rock/heavy thing (NB being more "metal" or hot shred stuff) to my ears.  Sure you can do classic rock with them (and a lot of things), but they scream easily and have lots of mids.

Abraxas or Emerald but maybe could they do the trick for you. I tried the Emerald and it was a nice pickup. If your LP has lots of natural mids, the VHII could fit the bill too. It's not mid-scooped. It has more presence and edge than the NB without being too hot or modern.

The more I play the new Holy Diver (bridge), the more it makes me think about the JB, but without the high mid spike (and with a bit more and tighter bass). Lots of presence, it sings and cut very well. Never thin or ear-piercing (note: my guitar has mahogany body) but huge authority. Good rhythm job, but really shines for lead stuff IMHO (harmonics just fly from the board). If you play in a two guitars band, you will take a lot of place and your second guitarist will curse you, for sure!

Tip of the day: give him a Nailbomb bridge and he will smile again. :D The NB lean towards the Duncan Distortion (but with more organic mids) to my ears, perfect for heavy rythm stuff.

I did not understand if the new Holy Diver set (Alnico V) = Rebell Yell.
Of if the RY is another different pickup. :?:

Ced777, I think Phil King has the two late versions. I am putting mine at the end of april(the first RY set).

There was a bit of confusion until Steve Stevens finalised his choice for the Rebel Yell.  I will let Tim confirm everything, but as far as I know, when the Rebel Yell is introduced, the specification will be the same as the current alnico V HolyDiver with a resistance of about 14.7K.  The original Holy Diver was a creamic magnet with a lower resistance.  I got mine in November 2005 at Music Live, so I don't know if any changes have been made since.

The 'new new' Holydiver will have a resistance of about 16K and will use different wire to the other BK pickups, but will still be alnico V.

Tim's description is:

I'd look at the Holydiver...........I've spent quite a lot of time working on this one recently revoicing it and Steve Stevens has taken one out for a spin on the Billy Idol tour which he's liking very much.
What I've done is change from a ceramic to an Alnico V magnet and adjusted the wind to provide more power and a slight mid peak. This really helps it push through but it's not nasal or honky at all. It will definately give you the cut and power for both Eruption and Jake's Ultimate Sin tone.

Ok, thank you Phil.
My current HD set is the future RY set. So I will just be curious about the future HD...
