Title: Just had two teeth out
Post by: Dmoney on January 13, 2012, 12:27:39 PM
The second most traumatic thing ive been through and the most painful.
One wisdom tooth and one molar. I'm one of those people that really fears dentists. When I was little I had to watch my mum and brothers get treated, we all sat watching each other waiting our turn, and seeing my mum in pain freaked me out.
I've had fillings but never had any kind of anesthetic before today. I was really anxious when I went for my first check up in 12 years a month ago, and I got told I could be referred and be properly sedated rather than just have a local.

So today I turn up and im already nervous, then I sit down and the dentist explains ill be having a local anesthetic and I don't have a choice, other than to leave and go to a hospital. So even though I was nervous as hell I decided to go for it.
After the first few injections I was almost throwing up, shaking, going dizzy, had to lie with my head back and then in the recovery poistion. Have a glucose drink.... I didn't like dentists before, never trusted them, don't trust them now. Still, got my teeth out in the end and now it feels like my face has been kicked by a mule.

any tips on killing the pain? i have dihydrocodeine and ibuprofen

Tempting, although i'm T-total.
they also gave my antibiotics and told me not to drink with them anyway.

I think there's only two types of anti-biotics that you shouldn't drink when you're on them. However I'm not medically qualified so that may be bullshitee!

they gave me metronidazole. I've just finished a week on another type because the tooth I was having out (the molar) started to cause me pain again and I could tell it was making my face swell a little. I got to the docs quick.

When I had my last wisdom tooth out I was in bad pain for nearly a week, so I went back and the guy said "It shouldn't be infected, but I'll give you some antibiotics just in case".  I think it was infected.  Anyway, the antibiotics did the trick.

Surprised they did a local for a wisdom tooth, mine was under sedation - I suppose it depends how hard it is to get to.  They said I'd stay awake but I was completely out!  Felt very strange afterwards.....

Wishing you a speedy recovery!

crack pipe? - that'll have you smashed off your tits and you won't care about anything

if dihydracodeine isn't doing anything, then your next step is probably morphine - see if you can get the oral version, that sorts out ALL pain, bliss  :D

I was pretty annoyed when he said it would be under local. He said they couldnt use gas because I have asthma, well... I don't have asthma, I just get the symptoms of it if i have a bad cold. He said they don't do sedation any more because they have to monitor people coming around and in that time they could get a bunch of appointments in, people would be waiting. It seemed totally pointless to send me there, given that the whole reason I got referred there was to avoid having just a local anesthetic. My wisdom tooth came out easier than the molar.

my teeth aren't hurting too bad now. A few cups of tea sorted me out. either that or the mixture of those codeine tablets and ibuprofen I banged down a few hours ago.

Proper codeine should do the job all right. I had all four wisdom teeth out when I was about 14/15, and reacted quite badly to the codeine they gave me, though I've had it since and have been fine. My face was swollen up like a hamster!

Just watch out taking codeine for several days - not because it's addictive (although it is), but because you'll get backed up and may produce some truly unholy shites. I laid an inverse iceberg of a dump after a couple of weeks on tramadol (related to codeine). :)

I can sympathise about the trauma of it - I had eye surgery recently and it was quite honestly one of the most horrific things I've ever had to go through. Now, my brain has pretty much blocked it out, but the thought of having to go through it again (which I may as my eye doesn't appear to be fully healed) is truly terrifying. I had a general when I had my teeth out, and they came out in 17 pieces, 2 whole teeth, 2 halves and one shattered utterly into 13 bits. Of course they were all under the gums at that age so a general was the only way to go, really. I can imagine it being very nasty to have a local, though!!

Hope you continue to recover quickly!

with root canal work - the only option is the anaesthetic - its so damn painful.

after a bicycle crash where i basically mullered at lease 6 teeth i've been getting used to dental work.

when it gets really bad i take both paracetamol and iburofen. haven't tried codine so far. but the ibuprofen/paracetamol mix takes the edge off for me. i heard about it from a guy sitting next to me on a plane who had cronic back pain.

dental pain is awful, i feel for you.

cheers guys,

the worst thing about it, is when I had my check up before xmas, they said I needed two out but said they could only do it under local anesthetic, and said If i was really anxious they could refer me for sedation. All that happened was I waited weeks to end up have local anesthetic, which I totally wasn't prepared for.

Roo, eye surgery sounds worse. I can't imagine it. I hope you don't end up needing it again.

I was exactly the same as you when I had a wisdom tooth out-under a local anesthetic too. I can't ever remember being so scared of anything before that could compare so I know what you must have gone through. Fortunately my Dentist was a great bloke and so I could be a complete wimp without worrying too much. In the end it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be though the fear beforehand brought back a nasty suppressed memory involving a man under a train that I could have done without.

I hope you get better soon.

I had a tooth out recently and a filling, and I dosed up on codeine and ibuprofen, it didn't completely kill the pain, but it certainly helped. Injections in the bottom hurt more than the top btw. I'm off for another filling on Monday. I am also not a fan of dentists. Took them 45 minutes to get my last tooth out. 15 of which was with some kind of drill. Made my ears tickle like $%&#.

Dunno, dental treatment is unpleasant but I've always found it pretty much painless once the first injection's gone in. Despite a couple of fillings, I've got a complete set of gnashers, including 4 wisdom teeth that I didn't have removed.

Do not take alcohol whilst taking metronidazole [or for 48 hours before you start the course or for 48 hours after you have finished it] otherwise you will become very ill indeed!

Just don't do it - trust me on this it is not worth the risk

Dreading my next dental appointment. I haven't been for about 3 years. No problems up until xmas where I had bad toothache for about a week. Tried to get booked in early January but at the minute none of the dentists round here seem to be taking new nhs patients :?

I called NHS direct when my toothache got really bad, I also had it for a week. They told me the place a few doors down was taking NHS patients. I dunno if places would be dishonest about taking NHS places?

Yesterday I had a bad migraine all day. Painkillers did nothing. I just had to take it really easy and not move about, otherwise I'd get really nauseous. I don't feel that good today but I'm better than yesterday. I need to try and leave my house I think.

sympathy :(, i agree that normal painkillers don't do much for toothache.recent experience confirmed this, but i did get
anti biotics from the dr which cured the suspected infection and i'm too going to have major drilling on friday.
the dentists to me is just this side of torture and i hate the experience with a passion.hate injections.
i remember 40 years ago being gassed unconcious by unpleasant white coated nhs dentists and waking feeling nauseous with a bloody mouth.(and pain)
i cope with it based on reason that the short sharp grimness of my treatment may be moderately less than the accumulated pain of worsening toothache that would ultimately lead to a visit anyway.i wish life had a ff button.

Yes, but your kidneys still take a toll from using alcohol with medication.

Antibiotics helped me loads too. One weeks worth got it sorted, but then two weeks after I had to go back on them because my face was getting a bit tender again. I can deal with needles and pain. I have tattoos after all, and I'm a bit stubborn when it comes to dealing with pain professionally after being injured or whatever. I just find the dentist really invasive and that makes it hard to deal with any pain. That said, having my teeth injected on friday was a bit beyond my usual pain threshold.

Nightmare over. 2 fillings, minimal pain. Great success. It helps that the dentist kept pushing her tits against my head though. Mmmmmmmmm, cushiony.

I think the best thing you can do to help with the pain is to except it.

accepting pain is partly what led to me needing two teeth removed. haha

Clearly you missed an opportunity to ask if she "needed a filling"

That's who I thought of when posting Philly (Afghan, not Afghan Jr). A small moment of crudeness on my part. I'm not normally one to be so crude but thought it too good an opportunity to not be crude.

I'm sure there's some joke to be had about oral hygiene as well.
