I'm new to the board. I recently purchased my first set of BKP pickups - Black Dogs from Nick at The Axe Palace. He's a great guy and his cutomer service is second to none. They're in a Carvin CT624 (Similar to PRS 24). It has a mahogany body, maple top, and ebony fret board. I play through a Splawn Quick Rod with a 2x12 cab with small block speakers. I am strictly a "bedroom" player. My tastes run from 60's, 70's, and 80's classic rock to some higher gain choices (Sabbath, Judas Priest, UFO).
While I found the clarity and definition of the Black Dogs to be fantastic I find that they're just not "hot" enough for the range of music that I play - too PAF sounding. The original pups I replaced in the Carvin are 13.6k Ohms and, while not on par with the BKP's, were actually surprisingly good pickups. I'm looking for a more liquid crunch and gain sound from the bridge - higher output for that 80's UFO, Scorpions, Def Leppard sound while still channeling my 70's Alcie Cooper, Deep Purple, and Kiss . I'm 53 years old and am not into extreme metal.
The problem is that ALL the BKP pups sound great! After listening to some clips from the site I find I'm drawn to the Rebel Yell, Crawler, and Holy Diver. Any suggestions from the board will be welcomed and appreciated. Although I'm a 53 year old math teacher. I still like to rock!

you need a od pedal in your chain :)

Holy Diver I would say; great 80's rock/metal pickup. Very fat sounding, plenty hot, and would suit that era's music.

+1
I also want to add that the Black Dog does put out quite a bit of power due to the strong midrange - the Holy Diver will be louder but not as much as you might hope.

Maxon OverDrive 808 reissue
or
some sort of line booster.
If pickups,
Maybe Holydiver or Rebel Yell.

I'll vote for Rebell Yell! Or..or ask Tim at sales department, he is spot on ! Good luck!

I second the RY!!! Great pickup. I also do have Carvin pickups in two of my Carvin DC NTs. I do like the tonal range of the M22SD and M22Ts, but they were a little to loose sounding for metal. I have been looking high and low to find a better quality pickup in the tonal range of these two especially the M22SD.

My vote goes to the Rebel Yell. Holydiver would probably not have enough crunch for you. If you don't mind ceramic magnets, Cold Sweat would be a good alternative.
Keep in mind that UFO and Scorpions tones are not that high gain, though.
Cheers Stephan

Going back to the original post, I'm just wondering if Rebel Yells might be overly bright in comparison with the Black Dogs?

If the tone of the black dogs is good but they just don't seem hot enough then the clean boost pedal would be the perfect solution. Just hits the front end of the amp a touch harder to give you more oomph without detriment to the tone (assuming you get a decent quality od or clean boost).
I'm surprised that the BD's don't give you enough power, tbh: I've used these for utter brutality! (Okay okay I have a baritone/od/5150-II, so it's not a fair comparison).
I use a bodenhamer bloody murder, which is excellent. Any TS9-type or similar pedal (someone already mentioned maxon 808) should do the job nicely.

I can only underline the idea of a booster or drivepedal.
Pickups: Holy Diver
