Title: Orange Micro Terror...thoughts?
Post by: JJretroTONEGOD on January 18, 2012, 06:50:04 PM
Hi I just noticed that orange amps plan to release the micro terror this year, I thought this would make a really good sounding recording amp,

the amp with cab is only £158! seems like a bargain....

what do you guys think?

here is s video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG4FYvMOLo8&feature=related (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG4FYvMOLo8&feature=related)

Jeez - that looks incredibly small! Sounds a bit fizzy but maybe that's due to the small cab. Would be interested to hear this through a bigger cab.

Hmmmm not too sure about that one. Love the tiny terror but I don't see the point in getting a low watt amp without an output tube.

+ 1 that's what I originally thought, would love to hear it through a 2x12 or 4x12

I very much doubt that it will sound that great for the sort of price they are selling it at. Possible more of a gimmick/impulse buy. I could see me getting one and then it appearing in seconds out a few weeks later.

Very difficult to make a judgement based on a youtube clip but I don't think it will be that great a recording amp.

I have a 1/2w Blackheart Killer Ant (although I put in the BitMo tone mod) and it sounds better than that and costs £90.  Shame it looks cack, though (but, then, I removed the box and put it on a base and now it looks ok)

Love it. Sounds like a whole load of fun and I bet it'd be ace for recording over the top screaming leads.

Sounds like....

Hughes & Kettner also put out a a mini 5W amp as bet. Seriously, how small does it need to be? I think both Orange and Hughes & Kettner have proven that small amps, around 15W, with proper preamps, can do most sounds you need at bedroom level. Why would I even consider that Orange Micro Terror over a Dark Terror, that has all the gain at low volume I could ever need?

Supposedly it does nice Blues sounds as well....

As a TT hard wired (and previously regular owner) I think...why?
For one, in the clip it does not sound good and I don´t like the thought of not having a tube powerstage.

To me this could be a nice toy for some, but for most the TT is by far the go to thing. The TT is not expensive and it will sound better (I bet you). While the TT can be loud you can get great sounds at resonable levels, it is amazing for recording, and the clean headroom is enough for most rock guitarists (it ain´t a fender after all).
Which nice the MT is supposed to fill...I don´t know.

5w all tube TT version would be cooler and a little less unneeded.

I´d rather hear more about the Jim Root TT and how it compares to the TT and DT and leave this MT in the ditch (I am not saying that it cannot turn out great, but damn, I´d be suprised).

The OR50 looks nice too.  http://youtu.be/0ZgxGUK97gY (http://youtu.be/0ZgxGUK97gY)

another not convinced here, but it would have to be tried.i'd prefer my cube 40 which does a range of dirt tones and
reasonable cleans with echo and reverb built in and loads of switching possiblilties.(for nearly the same price).
the dual terror is brilliant imo so i'm a 'fan' of orange, but the one featured here seems a bad compromise.(ie not pure tube but without the advantages of small modellers which are great for low vol practice)

yes I agree with you all mostly, I also just found out they are releasing an OR15! I'm very tempted to pre-order one now

Now if there was british (or generally point to point) version of that, I´d  be tempted. But after going from the TT to the TT hardwired I am hesitant to going back to chinese made amps.
Not that the difference was night and day, but it was there, noticable to me (did blind tests and all).

Sides that for my tunings 50w would be better I guess.

I just wish I had some mates who owned that amp so I could hear it in real life instead of youtube @poop deck quality; maybe they will release the OR15 and then later the hard wired one like they did with the terror?

What bothers me here is that they're doing it wrong and they know they're doing it wrong. Pairing a mid gain preamp with a solid state power amp just isn't going to produce an end result that is on par with the rest of the series. Solid state power amps do well when you want a power section that doesn't intrude on the preamp sound much, high gain and cleans mostly. An ECC99(which is specced very close to power valves) in push-pull would pair much better and satisfy the low wattage market, but would be more expensive for that section alone. This is a product that fills a financial bracket, not a particular size/wattage need and is trying to obtain sales based on the success of the Terror name. They could have made better choices here. Blackstar's small offerings(which have been out for some time now) are using solid state where it's least important to produce an affordable product.
