Me and my sister bought a cheap drumkit between us, as she wants to learn and I like to play em (not as much as guitar though obviously :P ). They dont actually sound too bad I cant stand cheap cymbals! I couldnt find a good drum forum, so I was wondering if anyone here knows of some good cheap ones to get? The drum kit at school has Paiste 402's (crash, ride, and hi hat) which I really like the sound of, so thats the kinda sound I'd like but if possible, without spending so much!
Cheers

What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine?
With the drum machine, you only have to punch in the rhythm once.
:P
-
Anyone got a GOOD answer :P

Tom, as you probably know, the quality of sound with symbols depends on how much you pay by and large. The cheapo ones sound like saucepan lids. Zildjian aare generally reliable and Paiste also seem to be ok- sorry, I cant offer much more than the obvious advice.

Yeah I know cheap ones sound like that, my hi hat and crash sound like saucepan lids  I guess ebay is the best place to look out for bargains, I dunno what models are regarded as "best" for rock though.

You can pick up a set of Pearl cymbals for pennies, especially on eBay, and their good value for money, don't worry. A very relaible rock purchase, and superb for a starter pack. (I play drums on the side.)
-
Oh I've heard Pearl arent too good (from our very own indy) but I've never heard any so I cant tell.. I've only heard Paiste!
-
Pearls are fine for what you seem to want. Unless youve got £200 to spend on some average Ziljians, which would be much better, but obviously more than the kit. When I said for pennies, I was referring to eBay - make sure you ask whether there's any damage to each cymbal if they don't say - so they're not traditionally supa-cheep.

Yeah I just want a good all round set for a general rock sound, not so much bothered about a ride yet but will do later on. So long as they dont have the shitety cheap clunk sound that mine have! The crash is so dull, I want a bright CRASH! not a CLONK! And the hi hat - I want it to go tisk tisk!
I found these, should I bid on em? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7386690141&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
Also what are the CX-500 series like? I think my mate actually had the hi hat in this series and I remember liking it..

They look fairly decent. Ask about any possible refunds, should there be some other damage (i.e. lots of wear) that's not visible. Also, if you haven't bid before on eBay, set yourself a limit and put in that bid if you can 45 seconds before it finishes. If you're lucky you'll beat the programs people use to snipe bids that do roughly the same thing. Good luck, if that's what you go for.
-
Ok I never really bid for stuff on ebay anymore allways go for buy it nows, easier

my drummer used to post on the drumdogs.com forum! if that helps... theres a trader section on there!

That site didnt work for me :?
-
What's hard about bidding? So long as you time it right, it's just point and click. You'll spend a bit more if you just go for Buy It Nows, fool.
-
Yeah, but I never have time to finesse the bidding!
Anyway, I always think of Zildjian as The Cymbals, though Sabian (which split off from Zildjian some years back and is a fierce competitor) are pretty generally as good to my inexpert ears. Of course, mad drummers argue constantly about which is really better (just like mad guitarists will :)).
Bonham used Paiste, didn't he? Can't have been all bad, then. On the other hand, Bonham could have played a trash can lid and made it rock. :)
Drumming is fun; I've plunked myself behind the kit sometimes at jam sessions, and while my technique isn't much, I've got rhythm and a decent enough sense for the song (and that took Ringo everywhere! :)). Wish some of the actual drummers I've played with had that! Though nothing lifts a band like a proper good drummer .....
I keep thinking it would be fun to learn conga or something. :) So many instruments, so little time. Ah well!
-
Ringo didn't have rhythm. :x

Blasphemy! :P If nothing else, the man could keep the beat! :)

meh... what was so great about the beatles anywhooo?

meh... what was so great about the beatles anywhooo?
-they were one of the first bands to really change their genre and risk alienating their fans
-first recorded use of samples (Revolution 9)
-arguably the first heavy metal track - Helter Skelter
-imaginative chord progressions and use of extended chords
-good use of key changes (these things are missing in modern rock/pop)
-they brought eastern instruments and spirituality into the western music genre
-and they just wrote some awesome tunes!
er...that's about the start of it
-
exactly!!! see what i mean... nothing special.... :P

Your use of smilies is the only thing stopping me beating you up.
Yeah, the Beatles were alright, I guess. :D :) :( :o  :? 8) :x :P      :!: :?:

haha!!
well i guess i just dont appreciate the beatles cause ive grown/am growing up in a completely different era plus i havent heard a great deal of their stuff.....i dont really like their music though even if they were such a pioneering band.
-
I was born after the Beatles broke up but was way into them as a teen. I've kind of moved on since then (as contemporary rock and pop itself has/did), but I still appreciate their work. It did kind of have a big influence on what other musicians were doing at the time and on what came after.
On the other hand (staying on topic and trying not to draw the ire of the legions of Ringo detractors out there :)), my favorite drummers are Al Bouchard (http://www.cellsum.com/ab.htm) (Zildjian user, BTW), Sami Kuoppamäki, and ... I dunno, I quite like Barriemore Barlow's mad drumming with Jethro Tull in the '70s. No idea what cymbals Sami and Barrie use (though I think Barlow played a Vistalite drum kit in Tull).
(BTW, Al B's current band, The Brain Surgeons, includes ex-Dictators/ex-Manowar guitarist Ross the Boss, and their newest disc rocks muchly! OK, I'm kinda going off-topic again ....)

Same, I never liked their music, its all a bit boring for me but I didnt grow up "in their time"
Anyway yeah, I can normally fit a rhythm to most songs so long as they arent odd timing/technical in any way, I wouldnt mind a double kick pedal tho
As for favourite drummers, John Bonhams style is great, as is the Pantera drummer (is his name Vince something?)
-
the drummer in my band has a double bass drum pedal- i presume thats the same thing as a double-kick pedal? :? either way they're really kool- the speed you can get from them is awesome
-
Double bass drum = double kick drum. You just need the intro to Motörhead's "Overkill" and you're away!
Yeah, I always feel like I should mention Bonham as a fave drummer, but his sound just stands out as so ... inimitable, really! I love watching him play on that Zep DVD set; there's a fill towards the end of the "Kashmir" on that that is just brutal. Great stuff ....
(I think of Hendrix in the same way, in terms of guitar. Too seminal for me to list as just a "favorite" for some reason!)
Oh, man, I gotta mention Matt Abts (Gov't Mule) as a favorite drummer. I liked the band over all better with Allen Woody on bass, but when I saw them on the last tour Matt Abts just blew my $h1t away. He'd just touch the snare or the kick and it was like a cannon had gone off! He came over like a combo of Bonham and Moon. Incredible! (He's a Sabian cymbal player, I think!)

ROLLING STONES
-
Good job I wasn't around when the Beatles bit of this thread came up ! All I will say to those who doubt Ringo's ability is "Rain" oh and "Good Morning Good Morning" . There you go I have said it- I will go back to my box now.
Hey Ratty mentions the Rolling Stones- now Charlie is the Stones according to Keef .
-
I heard McCartney played on both those tracks, mate. Get back out of your box!
-
N.B. That may or may not have been completely made up to fuel debate.

Sorry yeah its double bass, kick sounds cooler though 8)
My sisters actually picking up the basic rhythms quite quickly which is good, not bad considering shes only played for about 6 hours in total :D
I'll carry on looking for some cheap cymbals on't ebay then!
-
Not gonna bite
