Title: Are Blackguard Flat 50/52's potted?
Post by: Roboten on January 22, 2012, 05:25:39 PM
If they are, what kind of qualities do think going unpotted would bring to the sound?

Yes, unpotted: more dynamics/juice. I think a the potted BKP's already have plenty of magic.

Ok, thanks! But i was hoping to get a negative reply, see i'm having trouble deciding whether to get a pair of 52's or 50's, me wanting to have something in between their sounds. I like the power and fatness of the 50's, but to my ears the 52's see to have a bit more upper midrange/lower treble bite that i like, so going unpotted with the 50's would probably been perfect had they not already been unpotted.

My concern is that the 50's might be a bit too bassy, and i hate flabby bass on single coil guitars. Since there are almost no clips of the 50's in the forum i just have the sound clips on the site to go on, and i'm not sure the 50's low end is tight enough.

Is the low end a problem or am i just being overly paranoid? Is there anything that can be done to make the 50's just a tad brighter, like using a different magnet or maybe under-winding it a bit?

I have both sets, though they are in different guitars.  The 52 are in an original 50's tele that had SD's on it and the 50's are in a 62 MIJ tele.  The 50's are superb blues and rock pickups, but are a little darker than the 52.  The 52 is probably one of the best sounding tele bridge pickups around - though I have a lot of love for the Brown Sugar too.  If you want something in between then look at the Boss - Tim had recommended it to me when I was looking to get a Roy Buchanan tone.

If you use the toneknob the BG52 can cover a lot of ground. It gets fat with the toneknob turned down a bit.

Since there are almost no clips of the 50's in the forum

Warning : what is now known as the BGF52 started it's life as the "BFG50" then about one+ year ago (IIRC - please someone correct me) the BGF52 was renamed as "52" and a new BGF50 appeared, so quite a few "BGF50" clips (and reviews) are in fact about the 52.

I am actually aware of that, and i dont think i've found even one clip that i'm 100% sure is of bgf50's. I dont think the boss would be my cup of tea, the clips i've heard just didnt do it for me.

Is there anyone here who's got a pair of 50's that could maybe record a short clip?

And more descriptions of the 50's and 52's sound and over all character would be awesome!
