Title: paypal fees
Post by: Ochaye on January 24, 2012, 07:20:47 PM
there appears to be a difference of opinion when it comes to paypal "GIFT" payments.....what is the latest?

does the sender or the receiver have a fee to pay? is there a fee at all with gifts?

all my PP payments are done with my debit card

I wouldn't touch PayPal without using a credit card. If you get shafted on something an PayPal are as useless as usual, then at least with a credit card you have some protection as you can make a claim against your credit card provider and then getting money out of PayPal is their problem.

If you gift someone wonga you pay the fees and you have no comeback. So only gift people you know.

Debit cards - your money goes out of your account right away

Credit cards - the bank's pays it first and then bills you for it; it's not your money at first, but you get billed for it eventually.

On the internet I was advised by my broker to use credit cards, because the risk is more on the bank's side. However, I feel that in reality it is pretty much the same. Depending on your type of bank account, you might have fraud protection/insurance.

^ legally, though, it's not the same.

I'd rather rely on the law than on the charitable (!) banks

i wouldn't use a debit card online. that's just me. CC or nothing.

EDIT: i'd also be very wary of circumventing PayPal's rules if it leaves you with less protection. yes, they're a rip designed to maximise their profits, but if you have no comeback if something goes wrong what little you'll save will probably be scant consolation.

Like juansolo says, gift payments can't be refunded, legitimate purchases can.

Just on the subject of online credit card use, I've been a victim of ID theft in the past. Now I have a prepaid Mastercard that I use for anything online, costs a lot in additional charges but there's no way I'll get £8000 of surprise debt in my name when someone nicks it.

Seems like this thread is in the wrong category.
