Does a mule neck have a good split sound, or should i consider a hotter pickup for better coil splitting?
-
I haven't tried to Mule, but I think that it has been stated before that it splits well. I have a Stormy Monday bridge in a strat and I find the split tones pleasing.
-
I only use an autosplit which is IT middle + the outer coil of a mule neck (the slug coil) and this works very nicely for clean tones, gives them a tele esque vibe.
-
You may also want to consider the serie/parallel option instead of split - parellel coils give a lighter (and lower output), more single-coilish tone than the stock serie wiring while retaining the humbucking effect (for the record, the intermediate positions on a Tele or Strat are actually "2 coils parallel").
I've never tried splitting a BKP, but on all other 'buckers I tried the parallel option sounded way better than the split, regardless of the pup's output.

I split the Abraxas neck (essentially a Mule neck) in my CU22 and it works well.
-
Never played a Mule but I
- split the Holydiver bridge and the Cold Sweat neck in my PRS Custom
- the Miracle Man bridge in my alder strat and
- the Abraxas bridge in a HSS set up.
All work well split but with the exception of the Cold Sweat neck are much higher DC resistance pickups.
Cheers Stephan

I'm also surprised that no one beat me to it as well.

The splitted sounds of my Crawler and VHII are very nice.
