Title: NPD - MQ hot wind...
Post by: HTH AMPS on February 13, 2012, 12:20:39 AM
I've been loving the MQ neck in my Les Paul for a while now and have been on the lookout for a MQ bridge with a black cover since xmas.  Got lucky on ebay and it'll be on it's way to me by the end of the week I'd imagine.  It's apparently been wound slightly hotter than normal at 8k, so that suits me.

That seems like an interesting pup. I would love to hear some clips of the MQs n your LP so please do some when you got the bridge installed  :D

What about your Abraxas love, HTH? Do you still dig the pickup and have the set in another guitar or have you passed them on?

HS P90's are pretty much the greatest thing ever. Looking forward to clips of that little one :P

sounds perfect for you Ian.

i have a set of HS sizes p90s from another handwinder. they've been over wound quite substantially and have very high output (i think about 8.2k). the thing is though the output is mostly bias towards the bass end - which is great for sabbath, but less good for other styles - mostly the music i make ;)

i've been meaning to get tim to rewind them, but have kept procrastinating

Thanks for the responses guys, got the 'we missed you' card from the postie today with a 48 hour wait before I can pick the parcel up at the depot, hmmm...  :x

I will indeed be doing some clips once it's in my Les Paul, will have a matching set of MQs, woo!!!!  :D

At 8k, its only marginally hotter than a standard MQ bridge at 7.7k (nominal), but hopefully 'just' enough for a bit extra hair on it's balls, ha ha.

As for the Abraxas set, I don't own them any more and here's why...  my Vee with the stock Gibson pickups does everything I want from a hot humbucker to play rock stuff with and I ended up trying a few different pickups that usually sound great in my Les Paul, but nothing comes up and matches my Vee.  I think it's just one of those magic guitars bone stock.

Since I had already made the change to a MQ neck in the LP before xmas and love it, I decided that a MQ bridge would make the Les Paul different enough not to 'compete' with the Vee and to have its own vibe with the P90s.

Definitely big love for the Abraxas set, my fave BKP humbuckers - can do pretty much anything with that set.

I'm really lusting for trying out the abraxas but I would need a new guitar to put'em in  :) (and some cash).

hmm, thats the problem isn't it - so many BKPs you need more guitars.

Got the MQ here, measures at 10.5k, so its quite a hot wind afterall, much more than the 8k I was told by the seller.  Still, its all good as I wanted a hotter P90 and around 10k is what I'd have asked for anyway - or even a Stockholm at 16k.

The MQ bridge I have is a custom one, not sure how old, but its wound to 10.5k - quite a bit hotter than stock (7.7k).

My neck MQ is stock though - they sound great in the middle position, in fact, all settings.  It's the first time I've gigged with my Les Paul for some time, the Vee had taken over.

These MQs have plenty of poke, not quite sure how much grunt the stock bridge has though since mine is quite a lot hotter.

Clips to follow soon...

i imagine the bridge might not be 42 gauge wire at that DC though(?)

anyway - they look absolutely great in your Les Paul!!
