Title: Is my wiring OK?
Post by: dasazo on February 13, 2012, 06:20:17 PM
Hey,

I just installed new BKP sinners to my strat.

My question is regarding the "hum" which single coil type pickups have.
When installing the new pickups I decided to redo the cablings.

I am not sure whether the grounding is okay or is there a cold joint or so disturbing the grounding.

Shouldn´t the single coil hum be reduced when I am grounding the guitar by touching metallic part?(strings, bridge)
The hum sound which there is stays consistently the same whether I am grounding the guitar with my body or not.

I can't remember did the hum reduce with the previous pickups and cabling.

Also I have some problems setting the height of the pickups. The rubber studs seem to be quite hard so I cannot raise the pickups as high as I would like to.

Also, if I were to shield to pickguard and the routings would it have any effect on reducing the hum?

Hi,

Check whether the bridge is grounded. Open the tremolo cavity and see whether a wire is soldered to the claw that holds the springs. If yes, take off the pickguard and see whether this wire is soldered to the back of a pot or to the ground connection at the output jack. If it is and you still do not notice a decrease in hum when you touch the strings your guitar may be pretty well shielded, and any noise you are hearing is magnetically induced hum of the single coils. There is nothing to change that unless you switch to noiseless pickups.

If there is no such wire or it is not soldered to the back of a pot or to the jack ground connection, install this wire.

Cheers Stephan

Checked the wirings.

Bridge ground is in it's place and the solders are good.

The hum which I have seems to be disturbance radiated from my computer. I always play in front of my computer at home as I am using Pod Studio as an interface and amp+cab simulations.

When I move away from my computer I can hear only weak 50Hz hum. These new sinners seem to be a lot quieter than my previous pickups. The disturbance from computer can always be noise gated away :)

These pickups sound awesome!
