Title: Black Dogs vs Mahattans for jazz
Post by: 9X3 on February 15, 2012, 03:26:04 PM
I'm trying to decide on a set of humbuckers that I can get a nice clean jazzy tone similar to the Manhattan HSP90s.

The Black Dog's tone chart is basically the same as the Manhattan's, so I was wondering how they would fair for jazz cleans?

Any other humbuckers that work well for jazzy tones?

Thanks in advance!

The normal humbucker suggestion for jazz seems to be Stormy Mondays at least when the guitar is hollow or semi hollow, but other pups might work as well. Even the mighty Warpig is used by some jazzers because of its rounded tone and huge bottom end.

Thanks Mr. Air!

I was looking to staying within the Vintage-Hot realm, possibly lower end of Contemporary for the bridge pickup.

I'm mostly looking to decide on a neck pickup first, then proceed to match a bridge pickup that will cover the heavier stuff I write.

I'll be putting them into a Poplar body Tele with a solid Rosewood neck.

I think you might look at Mules too. I have them in a tele/LP hybrid (Saint Blues Bluesmaster) and they're stellar. The neck is great for jazz too.
