Title: Squeezing a Firebird Sound Out of a BK
Post by: TV Robot on February 18, 2012, 08:53:18 AM
Been lurking on these forums for what seems like a bazillion years without ever having made one too many posts (due to my "jobless high school kid status" I've never been able to commit to buying a BKP) but I'll go ahead and ask anyway. I was wondering if anyone thinks it'd be possible to squeeze a Firebird sound out of a BKP, and if so which ones?

The Lollar variety to be specific: http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=242&Category_Code=humbucker-pickups#mp3 (http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=242&Category_Code=humbucker-pickups#mp3)).

The Firebird humbuckers are very bright and do not have a lot of output. The closest BKP humbuckers therefore should be in the Vintage category, and there the brighter ones like the Stormy Monday or the Riff Raff. This is only by description of course since I have not played the Vintage BKPs yet. I do have a set of Lollar Firebirds though.

Cheers Stephan

some firebirds had p90s of course.

but really a mini-HB or a Firebird-HB is its own thing. not really like a fullsize HB at all.. if i have to say one then riff raff, but not really.

Any reason for not buying an actual Firebird pickup?  For example, are you after a Firebird sound from a guitar with full-size humbuckers?

if you search a bit you can get conversion rings.

I would just like to take a smidgenbit of caution before making a commitment to a pickup I might regret later. The hope was that I'd be able to get a BK that could still get me (close) to the FB sound, as well as other things (so long as there's other things that would be a plus). However if the "closest" thing to FB's is Stormy Mondays or Riff Raffs (pickups that I just haven't gravitated towards despite never having played them) then I suppose I'll probably pick up a different BK. They're quite a bit different than the Firebird minis or vintage BK HBs, but I've fallen in love slowly over time (spent lurking) with the Black Dogs, Nailbombs, Nantucket, and Supermassive (as a big Muse fan those last 3 especially); one of which I'll probably pick up (probably the Nailbomb or Supermassive though). Muchas gracias.
